		Zegama aparece citada como colación o universidad en un documento fechado el 12 de junio de 1384, por el que se anexioba a Segura junto con las vecinas Zerain, Idiazabal, Ormaiztegi y Mutiloa.
		Dicha unión se produjo en plena pugna entre navarros y guipuzcoanos (unidos estos a la corona de Castilla desde 1200 y por ello enfrentados al vecino reino), que por la situación estratégica de Zegama le afectaba especialmente.
		Zegama adoptó como escudo propio el de los señores del palacio de Jaureguía, los Ladrón de Guevara, que ostentaron el patronato de su iglesia hasta el año 1945.

		Zegama marks the beginning of the old road that used to join Gipuzkoa with the plains of Alava, via the unique Lizarrate pass, better known as San Adrián tunnel, because the hermitage dedicated to this saint is located inside it.
		On the mountains around Zegama is the megalithic station of Altzania, with interesting monuments such as Tartaloetxeta dolmen in Mount Saadar, Tartalo's dwelling (a gigant in Basque mythology).
		This extraordinary winding road runs upward between San Pedro and Otzaurte districts, to arrive at the mountain pass of the same name (opposite Benta-Zarra is the track that leads through Beunde to the al ready mentioned famous San Adrián pass).

		Esta fuerza simbólica unida a los conflictos y crisis que se han vivido durante los años que se lleva celebrando la peregrinación (hay noticias de la misma desde 1602) han conformado la fe y la identidad del pueblo de Zegama manteniendo esta costumbre adaptándola a los cambios sociales que se han vivido.
		La Peregrinación de Zegama se celebra el Domingo-Lunes de Pentecostés aunque los preparativos para la misma se inician con mucho tiempo de antelación lo cual permite observar la peregrinación no es solo un fenómeno sino que en la misma se pueden hacer diferentes lecturas del mismo acto.
		Al concluir la peregrinación al día siguiente con una cena en Zegama parece que la estructura social vuelve a ser lo que era; sin embargo, es evidente que en las personas que han realizado la peregrinación se inserta una nueva experiencia que concluye pensando en la peregrinación del año siguiente.
