Topic: Zell B Miller

New Georgia Encyclopedia: Zell Miller (b. 1932)
Miller's adaptability to the changing political climate has brought him both praise and criticism over the years, as he has ably negotiated his way through such difficult political issues as desegregation, urban sprawl, and the partisan realignment of Georgia.
Zell Bryan Miller was born on February 24, 1932, in Young Harris, in the north Georgia mountains.
Miller's mother built a home for herself and her children with rocks that she hauled out of a nearby stream, and that house became symbolic of Miller's rugged independence.

DLC: Zell Bent by Ed Kilgore
The estrangement of Miller from his Democratic past has now been completed by his recent endorsement of Bush for re-election, and his publication of a book being widely hailed by Republicans as an obituary for the southern wing of the Democratic Party.
Miller's arguments have merit, but the glaring omission in his account is his failure to acknowledge that the whole idea of a homeland security department was created and advanced by Senate Democrats, against Bush administration opposition, until the president suddenly shifted positions and co-opted the Lieberman-Graham legislation, finally taking credit for the whole enterprise.
That's an example of Miller's bent in the few sections of this book that really justify its title, his apostasy from the Democratic Party, and the lavish praise it receives from the rogue's gallery of Republican politicians and pundits featured in the jacket blurbs and the bookselling campaign.

As a senior policy adviser, Miller will provide nonlegal counsel to the firm's clients, said Tanenblatt, who added that it was premature to say which clients Miller would work with or if he would register as a lobbyist.
Miller, 72, is not a lawyer, and although he taught history and politics at the University of Georgia and Young Harris College for several years, he has spent most of his life in politics, beginning with his election as mayor of Young Harris in 1959.
Miller will work out of the firm's Atlanta and Washington offices, said Tanenblatt, adding "that would not prevent him from assisting clients across the country and overseas." Tanenblatt said Miller would not work full time but would be an active member of the government affairs team.

Zell Miller: A Democrat Who Insists His Party Left Him (washingtonpost.com)
Miller, who retired in 1999 as the most popular governor in Georgia history with 85 percent approval ratings, was for 40 years in state politics "the most jaundiced of yellow-dog southern Democrats," according to former aide Ed Kilgore, policy director of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council.
Among Democrats who have known him for decades, Miller's transformation is the stuff of mystery and armchair psychiatry, and everyone has a theory -- from a governor's distaste with being one of 100 senators; to a populist's aversion to Washington; to an aging politician's desire for attention.
Miller, like President George W. Bush, viewed this as putting loyalty to organized labor ahead of national security, and he blamed it for Cleland's defeat, as did a number of analysts in Georgia.
