  Zeltweg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the 18th century, the population shrank considerably because of the expansion of roads.
The center of Zeltweg was strongly polluted by truck traffic, as a large proportion of the traffic coming from Wolfsberg and Obdach (including log wood, hacked wooed and packaged goods) had to be brought through the town.
The Zeltweg Airfield was used for a Formula 1 Grand Prix as early as 1964.

The first event, in 1964, was held at a race track on the Zeltweg Airfield.
From 1970 until 1987, the event was held at the Österreichring (also located near Zeltweg).
These events were moderately successful, but in 1987, this track was also deemed too dangerous, by FIA standards, whereupon the event disappeared for a decade.

In the late 1950s a group of motor racing enthusiasts in the town of Zeltweg negotiated to be allowed to hold a race on the runways and taxiways of the local military airbase.
The result was a magnificent high-speed circuit, known as the Osterreichring which flowed through a series of impressive corners which would become in time part of F1 folklore.
The first Austrian GP at Zeltweg took place in mid-August 1970 - Rindt was dominating the World Championship for Team Lotus.

Zeltweg is a track which is often dirty and slippery, and the grip isn't always great.
Despite this, I feel very at ease on this circuit and I’ve always managed to be very quick in the past, so I hope it will be the case this year.

The new airfield track near the Styrian town of Zeltweg was the host to the third edition of its Flugplatzrennen, the predecessor of the first Austrian GP at the same track in 1963.
The works assured us of their best possible preparation for the Austrian GP which followed at Zeltweg aerodrome.

I did not attended personally this event, but the museum was open for two weeks only at the time of the report.

On 24/25 June 2005 the Airpower 2005 toke place in Zeltweg.
Germany showed a Tornado, an F-4 Phantom and one of the both Eurofighters wich were presented at Zeltweg.
It was a great show with a good alternation, nice warbirds, beautiful aerobatics teams, fast jets and (nearly) perfect weather.

Their Italian MB339s are beautifully caught at Zeltweg in this late evening picture.
Flying only: F-GSTD/4 A300B4-608ST Airbus Transport 6x Saab 105Ö FlRgt 3 The Saabs were flying from Linz and some confusion exists about their identity.
It is not known if they went into the air or not and which six of these eight Saabs ended up in the skies over Zeltweg.

The organizers of races at the Zeltweg airfield had been trying to get a World Championship Grand Prix since the late 1950s and after two non-championship races in 1961 (won by Innes Ireland in a Lotus) and 1963 (won by Jack Brabham) they finally got what they wanted.
The teams arrived having heard that the track was extremely bumpy and practice confirmed that this was the case with various drivers suffering suspension failures as a result.
Bandini duly won his first (and only) World Championship victory with Ginther second and Anderson third.

Who said that spectacular flying demonstrations are not possible with large transport aircraft?
The Swedish crew of this 84001/841, a Tp84 Hercules of the F7 wing, proved the opposite during the flying program at the very good airshow at Zeltweg.
