 | | In September 1944, 660 Squadron, which was then equipped with unarmed Auster light observation aircraft, was temporarily based at the Belgian town of Zelzate, about ten miles north of Ghent, operating in support of the 2nd Canadian Corps artillery units. |
 | | The local population wanted to welcome the squadron, being the first Allied unit to reach Zelzate, and so a football match to celebrate their arrival was arranged on the last Sunday in September by 660 Squadron member, RAF senior aircraftman Aubrey Ping, an airborne observer, and local resistance leader Marcel van Oost. |
 | | Aubrey Ping did return to Zelzate once in 1980 to visit his old friend Marcel van Oost but he was too ill to meet up, and died shortly afterwards. |
