The basic rebetiko dances are: the Zembekiko, the Hassapikos and the Tsifteteli.
It is widely believed that the Zembekiko was a war dance of the Zeibekides, a tribe Thracian decent.
The Zembekiko dance has no steps, traditionally a man's dance and danced solo.

Arcadia III - Comment by Gail Holst   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
It is not unusual for the mother figure to be addressed in the songs of the rembetika, and Theodorakis uses a traditional zembekiko style for 'O Sweet Celestial Mother' and 'The Mother of Charon'.
There is a striking image of the Virgin contrasted with the mother of Charon, the grim folk personification of Death, which seems particularly well suited to the dark character of the zembekiko...
Arcadia III is attractive music, but despite the two fine zembekikos, it lacks the unity of the Arcadia II cycle and the melodic inventiveness of some of the Laika.

The Ballad of the Dead Brother (II)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Five of the nine songs in the »Dead Brother« cycle are composed in the 9/8 rhythm of the zembekiko and the »Gloria« must be the first occasion on which such a rhythm has ever been used as a choral piece.
The tensions between the original modal inspiration and the imposed harmony is a typical feature of modern Greek popular music.
The choice of the zembekiko, the rhythm of the most serious, passionate and introverted of all Greek dances, is in perfect accord with the lyrics.

Elaine writes of her memories of the Greek scene of North Beach in San Francisco, for the Gilded Serpent
I was in time to celebrate both George’s birthday and mine — two survivors who had marched to the beat of their own drum and who at last were reunited in friendship.
I danced like I hadn’t danced in years, requesting a special zembekiko, Giati Kale Gitonisa, that I had danced to so many times to the strains of Stratos Dionysios, and of course, O Paliatzis, my old favorite.
Some trace the zembekiko to the emigration, while others trace it to more ancient cultures.

When this happened, you had three options; either you learned how to Greek Dance, you found something else to compensate for your lack of knowledge of Greek Dancing, or you just accepted the fact that you'd never find that Greek girl/guy of your dreams because you couldn't count out 1-2-3-kick without moving your lips.
zembekiko is playing and you're not very good, this might be a chance to go get a drink.
Come back toward the end of the song and then plop down on one knee and start clapping for the other guy who will be surrounded by the rest of the girls and the guys who have already been up.

Zembekiko is a popular (traditional) Greek solo dance for men -- I have heard it described as "a guy dancing around a glass of ouzo on the floor looking like he's rolling dice" (this description is perhaps "tourist-ish").
Generally known as 'the drunk man's dance' among Greek people, but according to Mary this is erroneous.
It comes from the history of Zembekiko (see above), but of course one does not need to be drunk to do it.

Proving that even a good Greek-American has something to learn from NBC, I have to admit that I never knew or had forgotten that the zembekiko beat that the scores of drummers were playing is supposed to mimic a human heartbeat.
Maybe I've been exposed to too many bad zembekiko mixes to recognize that beat than something other than arrhythmia.

Elaine reports on Bellypalooza for the Gilded Serpent
The Zembekiko is the classic Rembetika dance, an individualist expression of inner turmoil and struggle.
Sometimes called the drunken sailor’s dance for its seeming clumsiness, the Zembekiko actually requires a great deal of athletic skill and dexterity.
In Turkey, this ancient comedic dance is performed by men, often village people who simply twist their shirts into turbans and paint faces on their bellies.
