Zemirot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zemirot (זמירות) (singular: zemer) are Jewish hymns, usually sung in the Hebrew or Aramaic languages, but sometimes also in Yiddish or Ladino.
The best known zemirot are those sung around the table during on Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) and Jewish holidays.
The words to many zemirot are taken from poems written by various rabbis and sages during the Middle Ages.

The Ḥasidim affect the chanting both of zemirot and of "songs without words," or melodies set to meaningless sounds; nor are these cantillations restricted to the Sabbath table, since they aim at expressing the joy of the spirit upon all occasions.
In his compilations, first published at Safed in 1587, the zemirot are arranged according to the order of the Perso-Arabic modes in which fall the melodies to which they were set, while the original Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Rumanian, Spanish, and Italian titles are prefixed to his Hebrew verses.

The tone of the zemirot at this gathering might be more traditional, consisting of several aih yai yai’s in each refrain, with tempered fist pounding on the table at the climax of each song.
Zemirot sung on Shabbat by individuals at meals would rank as the most prevalent with the acapella; with ad hoc ensembles- treading a close second at least in popularity, if not participation, as this went to print.
Those who seek to detract from maintaining a high level of socializing, via introducing zemirot at Shabbat meals for a duration of extended length or by ad hocking at a party and monopolizing it, are being detrimental to the vital needs of the vast majority.

On the other hand, the Sdei Chemed claims that since zemirot are sung for the purpose of praising Hashem, a woman may sing loud enough to be heard by men so long as they do not strain to hear her voice and derive benefit from it.

A Rambam (Sh'vuot 12:9) rules that one who uses Hashem's Name in a sh'vuat shav (meaningless oath) or a b'racha l'vatala (an unwarranted blessing) violates the Torah prohibition to use His Name in vain.
As the aforementioned Rambam hinted, it is likewise permissible to use Hashem's Name to praise Him, including in Shabbat zemirot and other liturgy.
The explanation of this custom is apparently that we are concerned that we will not be in the proper frame of mind (B'tzel Hachuchma IV, 52) or may stop in the middle of a phrase (see Igrot Moshe, ibid.) or otherwise disgrace the Name.
