On what could be their best-known album Zen Arcade, the latter seems to be the case -- and even though the sound is sometimes painfully raw, the result is one of the more enjoyable punk albums ever released.
The songs on Zen Arcade were recorded in one marathon studio session - and sometimes, when you're being hit with guitar distortion from hell and undecipherable vocals being screamed into your ears, you might find yourself wishing that a little more time and TLC had been put into this album.
Zen Arcade was their clearest release to this point in their career, although their days as an independent act were quickly coming to a close.

It tried so hard to be the corporate "Zen Arcade" that it nearly became a parody of it, which only serves to solidify the strength and dignity of the original.
Two decades later, "Zen Arcade" still sounds fresh -- the promises of punk rock fulfilled, and, in the same breath, left far, far behind.
In the end, the legacy of "Zen Arcade" probably meant less to punk in 1984 than it does to rock as a whole in 2004 -- a glimpse of all the things it could have been.

The individual musicians’ multifarious interests have meant that gigs are sporadic – the band tends to devote more time to exploring new music and songwriting, but the results are certainly well worth the wait, as can be seen in the rapturous response of their devoted fans.
Some argue that Zen Arcade are seen at their best at smaller intimate gigs, like the “unplugged” sessions at legendary jazz venue The Bassline and Back2Basix, showing off their songwriting skills and musicianship.
