During the Bosnian War of 1992-1995, Zenica served as a base for the foreign mujahedin, including the infamous el-Mojahed and the 7th Muslim Brigade.
The city was known for its bad treatment of non-Muslims, with Croats and Serbs alleging the existence of 11 concentration camps in and outside the city, 7 for Croats and 4 for Serbs.
The local population of Serbs and Croats either left at the beginning of the war or were ethnically cleansed later, leaving Zenica with a 90% Bosniak population, and the multi-ethnic community shattered.
