Three Laws of Robotics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Giskard Reventlov was the first robot to act according to the Zeroth Law, although it proved destructive to his positronic brain, as he was not certain as to whether his choice would turn out to be for the ultimate good of humanity or not.
The Laws of Robotics are portrayed as something akin to a human religion and referred to in the language of the Protestant Reformation, with the set of laws containing the Zeroth Law known as the "Giskardian Reformation" to the original "Calvinian Orthodoxy" of the Three Laws.
Where the laws are quoted verbatim (such as in the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century episode, "Shgorapchx!"), it is not uncommon for Asimov to be mentioned in the same dialogue.

Zeroth Law of Robotics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zeroth Law of Robotics was first formally laid out in Isaac Asimov's Robots and Empire (ISBN 0586062009) as an extension of his Three Laws of Robotics.
It is also stated, although not under the title of the Zeroth Law, in The Evitable Conflict, where it is considered a natural outgrowth of the First Law for positronic devices which have the means of large-scale extrapolation.
The Three Laws are then modified to explicitly forbid violation of the Zeroth Law.

Roger Clarke's Asimov's Laws of Robotics
was that of the invention of a robot....
Robots might directly or indirectly harm humans or their property; or the damage may be economic or incorporeal (for example, to a person's reputation).
Under the second law, a robot appears to be required to comply with a human order to (1) not resist being destroyed or dismantled, (2) cause itself to be destroyed, or (3) (within the limits of paradox) dismantle itself.

Jamihossain.org: The Laws of Humanics - the Zeroth Law
Since this law is at a level higher than the 1st law that deals with protection to ‘human being’, it implies that protection to an individual human being can be overlooked in order to protect the entire humanity.
It is possible for a person or a group to conclude on the basis of their understanding of their ideology, cause or religion that in the larger interest of humanity ‘in the context of their belief’ it is correct to cause harm to a few people, who they see as enemies.
The 0th law is being used by individuals, groups and even nation states to justify violence on groups of human beings.

Zeroth law of thermodynamics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
The zeroth law of thermodynamics is the law which states that thermal equilibrium is transitive.
The zeroth law states that this relation is transitive, which means that whenever system A is in thermal equilibrium with B, and A is in thermal equilibrium with system C, then B and C are also in thermal equilibrium.
However, the need to state it explicitly as a law was not perceived until the first third of the 20th century, long after the first three laws were already widely in use, hence the zero numbering.

Giskard Reventlov was the first robot to act according to the Zeroth Law, although it proved destructive to his positronic brain, as he violated the First Law.
Some amateur roboticists have evidently come to believe that the Three Laws have a status akin to the laws of physics; that is, a situation which violates these laws is inherently impossible.
Sladek later wrote a novel, Tik-Tok, in which a robot discovers that his so-called "asimov circuits" are not restraining his behavior at all, making him in effect a sociopath; he comes to doubt whether "asimov circuits" are even technically possible, deciding that they are simply a pseudo-religious belief held by robots.

First Law: A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm, unless this would violate the Zeroth Law of Robotics.
When one mentions the word 'robot', it usually conjures up all sorts of mental images, some benign, some not so benign, most likely due to the influence of the entertainment industry in Hollywood, which frequently portrays robots in what might be mildly termed a 'bad light'.
This allows the robot to maintain brush surface contact when traveling over terrain changes up to approximately 5 degrees or so, as is found when transitioning from a solid floor surface to a carpeted one, and vice-versa.

Zeroth law: A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
Therefore, the third law is not really needed, because the androids will never make the careless mistakes humans make and therefore their existence will never be in danger.
It appears that according to the first law, the android will not be able to defend himself because he may "injure" the human who is trying to destroy him.

The Zeroth Law proves destructive to Giskard's positronic brain when he attempts to act upon it, as he violated the First Law in doing so and thus brought on a life-threatening "moral" conflict.

The Zeroth Law, on the other hand, deals with humanity as a whole and, as such, individual humans and individual robots are often disregarded and treated in a way forbidden by the Three Laws.
Because the first law lays down no guidelines whatsoever as to what a robot is to do when it contradicts itself, she must figure out which part of the law is more important; she cannot do nothing or shut herself down until the problem goes away or she violates [2].
Robots can't 'interpret' the laws, injuring is injuring, whether it be physical damage or emotional distress.

The notion of the 3 Laws being subverted when applied on a grander scale (in order to best take care of humanity, then it's necessary that individual humans be, ah, inconvenienced; the idea that protecting humans means taking away means taking away their free will) begs to be the underpinning of the entire movie.
I found it curious, though, that in the movie the Zeroth Law (to care and protect humanity as a whole) is enacted by the "villain" VIKI, whereas in Asimov's stories the Zeroth Law is enacted by the protagonist "hero" robots, R. Daneel Olivaw and R. Giskard Reventlov.

In the course of writing these stories Asimov gave much thought to the possible behaviour of robots and their interaction with and impact on humans, and formulated his famous Three Laws of Robotics, which first appeared all together in his 1941 story, Runaround.
Asimov's Laws of Robotics have led to much debate and conjecture on their applicability to the actual development of artificial intelligence.
While the Laws have greatly influenced science fiction writers and film makers, it remains unlikely that they will be applied to real life robotics any time soon.
