We have found that, in contrast to the far-field P wave, which can be reproduced satisfactorily by the zeroth-order ray approximation in all directions from the source, the far-field S waves can be reproduced satisfactorily by the zeroth-order ray approximation only in directions far from the kiss singularity.
In order to estimate accuracy of this approach, we perform a series of numerical experiments covering various station configurations from very dense to sparse, and exploiting either only P or both P and S waves.
The formulae are approximate because we assumed a weak velocity gradient and used the first-order perturbation theory.

 Dipole Approximation
Within the dipole approximation, the differential cross section (cross section per unit solid angle) for angle-resolved photoemission with linearly polarized x rays is described by three quantities: the partial cross section, s(hn), the angular-distribution parameter, b(hn), and the angle (q) of the photoelectron trajectory relative to the polarization vector.
At this level of approximation, the recent rare-gas experiments showed significant modifications of the photoelectron angular distributions compared to those expected within the dipole approximation, modifications that were in generally good agreement with the first-order calculations.
The complex angular dependence of the differential cross section means that which corrections to the dipole approximation are needed depends on the experimental geometry, but the new results demonstrate that researchers need to be ready to include nondipole effects through at least the second order in analyzing their results.

Approximations of this type, while not a complete substitute for numerical procedures, can be very useful.
Higher order approximations and the problems of simultaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer will be treated later.
In the zeroth approximation then the system can be considered to consist of two zones, as pictured in Figure 1 for a round tube.

Orders of approximation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orders of approximation have been used not only in science, engineering, and other quantitative disciplines to make approximations with various degrees of precision but also more generally, and more loosely, to indicate relative precision outside these disciplines in the form of "first level", "second level" and so on, "approximations".

A zeroth-order approximation of a function (that is, mathematically determining a formula to fit multiple data points) will be constant, or a flat line with no slope.

An order of magnitude is the class of scale or magnitude of any amount, where each class contains values of a fixed ratio to the class preceding it.
Colloquially, the phrase orders of magnitude is usually used to describe a value that is many times larger than the value to which it is being compared.
The order of magnitude of a number is, intuitively speaking, the number of powers of 10 contained in the number.

Zeroth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The zeroth item is the initial item of a zero-based sequence (that is, a sequence which is numbered beginning from zero rather than one), such as the non-negative integers (see natural number).
In this context using "zeroth" as an ordinal is not strictly correct, but professional shorthand.
A common use of zeroth outside computing is in the name of the zeroth law of thermodynamics, a law that was formulated after the first, second and third laws, but considered more fundamental.

In this way in maximization, the approximate solution to the linear equations used in the preconditioned conjugate method is more accurate, or the accurate solution to the linear equations required in the accurate Newton method is easier to be found.
Zeroth-order approximation means that in the solution of a large set of linear equations (or equivalently the inversion of a large matrix) non-diagonal elements are ignored, under the assumption that the diagonal ones dominate.
Specifically, the approximate maximum point found by cubic interpolation is used as the initial guess to start a search for the accurate maximum point, using the Newton method in a single variable.

Under this approximation, the potential function does not reflect the effect of local solvent environments on the stability of the dielectric-dependent interactions (solvophobic, coulombic and hydrogen-bond).
In order to incorporate this effect, we rescale the zeroth-order contribution of each pair, U0(i, j), by introducing renormalization factors fi and fj which depend on the level of desolvation of residues i and j.
In order to include local correlations between the basin dynamics of neighbor residues, the I-sites library of local sequence-structure patterns [8] is used to complement the information encoded in the distributions of Ramachandran basins.

We study properties of S waves generated by a point source in a homogeneous transversely isotropic medium and propagating in directions close to a kiss singularity which coincides with the symmetry axis of the medium.
In analogy to the near-field wave, which appears in the vicinity of a source, we call the interaction wave as the "near-singularity wave", because it is prominent only in the vicinity of the S-wave singularity.
The near-singularity wave is a non-geometrical wave, being described by higher-order ray approximations and neglected by the geometrical ray theory.

 The CASE Approximation
Given the flatness of the long-range operator it is reasonable to assume that it is of less importance to the wavefunction than the short-range function.
Therefore it is not unreasonable to expect the attractive (nuclear-electron) and repulsive (nuclear-nuclear and electron-electron) Coulomb interactions between widely separated regions of a molecule to approximately cancel.
If the approximation proves to be a disaster all is not lost, as CASE can be employed as a zeroth-order approximation upon which higher-order corrections can be constructed.

By this principle we first calculate a free field solution which may be viewed as the zeroth order approximation to the ship response.
This approximation is then corrected when the free field is applied to the structure by means of a fluid structure interaction treatment at the wetted interface.
Although the attempt to modify the zeroth order approximation, and thereby improve successive approximations, was investigated, the results indicated that this level of refinement was not warranted.

On the other hand, if we choose to make J positive, so that the potential and the rate of proper time decrease as we approach the source, then the constant k must be negative.

Photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has developed during the last few decades into an extremely useful experimental technique for studying the electronic structure of atoms and molecules, and in particular for analyzing the bonding characteristics of orbitals and their mutual interactions [2].
In order to interpret a PE spectrum and to fully exploit the information contained in it, a theoretical determination of the ionization potentials (IPs) is required.
The SCF energies and the corresponding integrals, which were calculated by a particular semiempirical method (MNDO, AM1 or PM3), were taken as the zeroth order approximation for the Green's function expansion and a maximum of 80 occupied MOs and 80 virtuals MOs were included in the active space for the OVGF calculations.

), but are completely ordered perpendicular to the field, since they always remain tied to the same field-lines as they convect in the plasma flow.
Thus, flux freezing leads inevitably to the prediction that in plasma systems space becomes divided into separate cells, wholly containing the plasma and magnetic field from individual sources, and separated from each other by thin current sheets.
The ``separate cell'' picture constitutes an excellent zeroth-order approximation to the interaction of solar system plasmas, as witnessed, for example, by the well defined planetary magnetospheres.

In the appendix, we give a description of the method (Mahajan and Rogava 1999) for studying the nonexponentially evolving disturbances in shear flows with arbitrary velocity fields.
With these approximations for the mean velocity, we are ready to write the set of linearized equations governing the local evolution of small-scale perturbations.
In order to extract the underlying physical content, it is useful to show that the system (19-22) reduces to a singlesecond order linear ordinary vector differential equation with variable coefficients:

For more than 20 years, industry experts have been reciting Brooks’ Law as gospel: Adding people to a late software project is like pouring gasoline on a fire--it just makes it later.
And it’s actually worse than this statistic suggests because more than half of the late projects trimmed significant functionality in order to meet their 120-percent-behind-schedule result.
Every project eventually reaches a point at which adding staff is counterproductive, but that point occurs later than Brooks’ law states and in limited circumstances that are easily identified and avoided.

As a zeroth order approximation we might consider a plane wave to be a model of a beam and its propagation vector to be a model of a ray.
Thus over a flat hot surface, such as a desert expanse or a sun drenched roadway, air density locally increases with height and the average refractive index may be approximated by a simple linear variation of the form
But the analogy is even stronger in the paraxial approximation where the Hamiltonian is approximated by an expression which is identical in form with the Hamiltonian of a non-relativistic particle -- viz.
