Tadesse grew up in the high-altitude village of Adi Bana in southern Eritrea and spent hardly any time in the capital, Asmara, before going to the 2002 world championships and moving to Spain a month later.
Tadesse, who is liked wherever he goes for his easy manner and his modesty, returned last month to Eritrea for the national championships and the chance to see his family.
Tadesse said he was working towards the April 1-2 world cross-country championships in Fukuoka, Japan, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he has not yet decided which event to run.

Tadesse and Berhanu were the only athletes who could match the speed of Tonui, but after just three miles the Kenyan himself fell away.
Tadesse maintained his form and his time of 44mins 34secs at the 10-mile stage was the second fastest-ever and only 10seconds short of Haile Gebrselassie's recent world record.

Tadesse, the 23-year-old, the World Cross Country long race silver medallist last March, destroyed a high class which included defending champion Dejene Berhanu of Ethiopia who had set the previous fastest ever time run in the UK with his win here last year (59:37).
Tadesse passed through 10 miles in 44:34, which is the fastest ever clocking for that distance behind Haile Gebrselassie's recently set world best of 44:24 (4 Sep).
Tadesse, whose previous personal best for the distance was 61:26 when finishing seventh in the 2003 World Half Marathon Championships, sprinted down the sea front finish in South Shields, crossing the finish in 59:05.

Eritrean Tadesse said Friday during the pre race press conference that he had asked the pacemakers for a very fast first ten kilometres of 27:45.
He pressed the pace and a group of three, Tadesse, Kipchumba and another Kenyan runner Martin Lel passed the 10km marker in 27:55, ten seconds slower than what the 23-year-old Tadesse had asked.
