ZFS: the last word in file systems.
After all, file systems are what they are: vulnerable to silent data corruption, brutal to manage, and excruciatingly slow.
Because ZFS is built on top of virtual storage pools (unlike traditional file systems that require a separate volume manager), creating and deleting file systems is much less complex.
Consider this case: To create a pool, to create three file systems, and then to grow the pool--5 logical steps--5 simple ZFS commands are required, as opposed to 28 steps with a traditional file system and volume manager.

This means that you are much less likely to lose data than on a file system that uses fsck or journal replay to repair on-disk data corruption after a crash.
Creating a decent local file system turned out to be more than big enough of a problem to solve all by itself; we'll leave designing a distributed file system for another day.

 Solaris 10 Data Sheets
Anyone who has ever lost important files, run out of space on a partition, spent weekends adding new storage to servers, tried to grow or shrink a file system, or experienced data corruption knows that there is room for improvement in file systems and volume managers.
The Solaris Zettabyte File System (ZFS), is designed from the ground up to meet the emerging needs of a general-purpose file system that spans the desktop to the data center.
The centerpiece of this new architecture is the concept of a virtual storage pool which decouples the file system from physical storage in the same way that virtual memory abstracts the address space from physical memory, allowing for much more efficient use of storage devices.

Sun Solaris To Linux: Size Matters After All - Hardware News by InformationWeek
Sun Microsystems is about to up the ante in the open-source race, adding a 128-bit file system to its Solaris 10 operating system so that users can leave behind any worries about ever exhausting their virtual memory space.
Linux, Microsoft Windows Vista, and most Unix systems employ either 32-bit or 64-bit file systems, which for the next 10 years are likely to be able to handle the needs of the largest computer systems.
But Sun is talking about a 128-bit file system, which it concedes is unlikely to be needed for the next 10 years, when 64-bit systems start to run out of steam.

These existing solutions failed to offer the flexibility to work with existing customer file systems, required application recompiling, or were fixed in size, limiting, for example, the number of allowed privileges.
Most file systems today require a volume manager because they are only able to deal with a single disk or volume.
For example, space is shared dynamically between the file systems in the pool without the need to grow or shrink them, and all file systems can utilise the maximum throughput of the pool.

Apple is planning to use Sun Microsystems' Zettabyte File System (ZFS) for its OS X operating system, Sun employee Eric Kustartz said on an OpenSolaris mailing list.
ZFS is the world's first 128-bit file system, providing 18 billion times the storage capacity of a current-generation 64-bit system.
A zettabyte is equal to 1,024 exabytes or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes.

Sun claims that a system can have more than 8,000 Containers, but it's hard to imagine a scenario in which a number that high would be useful, or a system on which they could run without a significant loss in performance.
ReiserFS v4 may be a significant step forward for Linux file systems, but looking through the feature list on its Web site, I don't see anything like the ability to add storage space dynamically or integrated checksums to protect against data corruption.

Solaris 10 to Get Its New 128-Bit File System
He said Sun expects system administrators to view this first ZFS release as a 1.0 release and to take their time migrating to it, but once they see the improvements in data integrity and ease of management, "I think they will find it very compelling," he said.
While no one needs 128-bit file systems today, and probably will not any time soon, Ratcliffe said, he argued that at the rate storage is growing it was clear that people would come to need more than 64-bit file systems, and the easiest way to deliver this was by giving them a 128-bit file system.
Solaris ZFS 1.0 brings a number of advances on current file systems, according to Ratcliffe, including end-to-end data integrity where a combination of "checksum" and transactional copy-on-write mechanisms are used to make sure that data is correct.
