  Beware the perfect people mover--March 12, 2000
Yaroslavsky is right that the new buses -- hopefully powered by clean fuel and not the dirty diesel that's standard in Brazil's buses -- are a cheaper and faster way to move more people.
Zev has put a lot of work into this, consulted with the best planners around, and I think he is on the side of commuters and not contractors.
Zev is the man on the spot on this, so e-mail him at zev@bos.co.la.ca.us and ask lots of questions; it's your money and your gridlock.

Zev based his opposition primarily on three points: (1) The "W" Hotel Corp. did not have an equity position in the project so there is no guarantee that a "W" Hotel will be built; (2) A portion of the project was to have included condos.
Zev left the door open for the developers to return and ask for an extension prior to March 20 if "substantial" progress is made.
Zev did observe at the meeting that he had received our e-mails, but felt the Chamber "was uninformed".

Yaroslavsky said piecing the funding together is a realistic goal and is necessary because the project will cost $2.6 million per mile, more than most roads cost.
