Computed estimates of the contribution to infant death, by the categories of maternal health, newborn care, and infant care, were 10%, 23%, and 67%, respectively, when using the live-birth definition from the Soviet era.
These estimates shifted to 24%, 41%, and 35%, respectively, when using the WHO definition, yet only 8% of the Zhambyl Oblast MCH budget was earmarked to maternal health and newborn care, which we estimated accounted for 65% of infant deaths.

This action by the Zhambyl Region Court left intact the decision of the Taraz City Court, which had already established that the worship and activities of Jehovah's Witnesses should indeed remain legally recognized and protected.
By mid-morning Monday, all the participants, including attorneys for Jehovah's Witnesses as well as representatives of the city and district prosecutor's office, were ready to start the hearing.

The deputy prime minister believes that the issue of supplying gas to the country's southern region should be solved in the context of the presently existing problems of CIS countries regarding economic integration, which involve Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, too.
Akhmetov said that "if the Uzbek government pursued a clear enough and transparent price policy regarding gas supply", the Kazakh leadership "could easily buy" gas from this country for its southern regions, rather solving this problem by developing the Amangeldi gas filed.
He said that so far the Kazakh government "every year has faced an unpredictable situation" regarding Uzbek gas supplies to Kazakhstan and that was why it was forced to revive work to develop gas fields in the Zhambyl Region.
