Never heard of this type of a sword in Japanese history context.
The Zanbato is the just the Japanese pronounciation of the Zhanmadao which was created by in the Song Dynasty.
There are several different versions of the Zhanmadao including the Zanbato but not any that look like Watsuki's version.

 Song and Yuan swords
This type of sword is what I believe to be a direct copy and descendent of the Song Dynasty zhanmadao or horse-chopping sword, with a handle vs blade ratio of 1:3 and a total length of more than 1.2 meters.
Developed in 1072 AD, the zhanmadao was designed to enable Song infantry troops to cut through heavily armoured cavalry riders and horses.
When they confronted an enemy cavalry charge, they were trained to bend low and use the zhanmadao to strike/chop at the legs of those horses of the enemy.

chinese dao vs japanese katana - China History Forum, online chinese history forum
Zhanmadao may be a bit heavier, then again i've heard that name applied to a dozen swords...
The zhanmadao is definitely heavier than the katana - it's a two-handed weapon, while the katana is one-handed.
The Zhanmadao was a primary weapon in the battlefield, capable of cutting through iron armor (which the Katana cannot).

There are extant examples of both the "wodao" and the "zhanmadao" in the collection of the Forbidden City Palace Museum.
Note that the beidao, shuangshoudai and changren dadao are sabers and look similiar to the zhanmadao, but with varying blade and handle lengths.

The Song dynasty revived the use of the zhanmajian under the name 'zhanmadao' - but its dimensions were probably rather different from the original (2:3 handle to blade ratio rather than 1:1).
The zhanmadao that is known today is commonly called the pudao....
The zhanmadao of the Qing dynasty as you know is a totally different creature...

Civilization Fanatics' Forums - Unit Request: Ming Two-Handed Swordsman
The Zhanmadao (one of the single-edged two-handed Chinese swords) was used in various military divisions of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including local militias.
Zhanmadao swords bear a superficial resemblance to the Japanese No-dachi sword, due to the importation of Japanese swords (as well as Japanese pirate raids) during the Ming Dynasty.
Similar swords were also used by the Koreans in their resistance against the Japanese invasions led by Hideyoshi in the 1590s.

 Question 2
"In the 5th year of Xining (1072), the Emperor (Shenzong) showed the (newly-designed) zhanmadao to the Court Offical Cai Ting, who commented on its excellent workmanship and its ease of use.
Under Emperor Shenzong, who had placed a heavy emphasis on weapons manufacture and design, this heavy two-handed sword, the zhanmadao, was devised to be used by the Song's infantry forces to cut through their enemies' heavily-armoured cavalry (armoured horses and riders).
The weapon was perceived as effective in combat, as was recorded in "Official History of the Song Dynasty" under Chapter 143 of the Records (zhi), sub-chapter 4 of the military (bing) section.

Sword Forum International - Zhan Ma Dao and Pu Dao? Zhanmadao and nodachi?
I am not sure of the lengths of the zhanmadao in the mid-Ming Dynasty, but the Japanese nodachi at the time was probably around 1.95 meters.
As for the Qing Dynasty zhanmadao, it was over 1.5 meters long.
I have received helpful feedback from certain fellows from the Nihonto forum about the probable/possible use of the nodachi to cut horse legs, but would look forward to receiving more info from nihonto scholars on how the nodachi was used during the 13th-16th century, based on primary source historical records, war tales etc.....

The zhanmajian was (according to one theory) a large single-edged blade with a shaft as long as the blade itself, similar to the Japanese nagamaki, and was probably wielded by specialised elite units.
In the Tang dynasty it came to be known as the modao, and in the Song dynasty it was revived in a modified form known as the zhanmadao.
These anti-cavalry tactics were so successful that by the 6th century, lancers generally preferred to engage each other rather than charge at infantry spearmen.

Sword Forum International - Dadao and other two-handers.
Tang mural painting dated 767 AD In the Song Dynasty, a massive double-handed backsword called the "zhanmadao" or "Horse Chopping Sword" was devised in 1072 AD to enable Chinese infantry units to take down the enemy's heavy cavalry.
The elite Northern Border Troops under the command of Ming General Qi Jiguang during the the 1570s-80s had also used another type of 2-handed saber known as the "changdao"; its design inspired by the Japanese nodachi.
Though you guys might like to see my digital recreation of what a Qing Imperial zhanmadao would look like, based on the original photo of Scott's Rodell's extremely rare Imperial 2-handed saber......FYI, the original zhanmadao is over 1.5 meters long.

These tribes used the same tactic of arrow assault, while the Tang army suffered heavy casualty, they dismounted and charged at the center while the cavalry concentrated at the flanks with Tujue auxiliars returning the fire and crushed the Xue Yang Tuo.
In the Tang, crossbowmen also carried the modao (a version of the zhanmadao) as a close-quarters weapon against cavalry, while in the Song dynasty large crossbows and pole-axes proved effective against heavy cavalry charges.
The more famous battle are those done by Song general Yue Fei.

In wars around the world, swords are not used as the main weapon in armored combat because there are other weapons better suited (when I say swords, I'm not including the large two-handed ones like zhanmadao and zweihanders that were designed for battlefield use)
