Wen Jia's eulogy simply says that the great canonical figure of Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) was his father's model in all three of the major cultural pursuits of verse, calligraphy and painting.

This narrative, associated with the name of Dong Qichang, focussed long-standing ideas about the distinction between amateur and professional artists into two lineages, the apogee of the superior, amateur one being situated historically in the fourteenth century, the era when Zhao Mengfu, Ni Zan, Huang Gongwang and Wang Meng were active.(Ho, 1976: Nelson, 1983).
