The Russian government regards Zhitomir as the central point of the Jewish population of southwestern Russia, as Wilna is considered the Jewish center of the northwestern part of the country.
The latter remained at the head of the school until it was closed (together with the one at Wilna) in 1873 because of its failure to provide rabbis with a secular education who should be acceptable to the Jewish communities.
After the massacre of Zhitomir a committee was organized to collect money for the families of those who had been killed; it received about 33,000 rubles from Russia, 9,500 from England, 1,500 from Germany, and 6,000 from the United States.

Zhitomir, a city in the former USSR in western Ukraine, is located by the Teteriv River, a right flank tributary of the Dnieper, near the delta of four rivers and the junction of railroad tracks and highways.
During this period Hasidism spread in the city, and among the students of the Maggid (preacher) from Mezheritsch was Reb Zeev Wolf from Zhitomir.
In 1847 a second printing press was established in Zhitomir by the three brothers Chanina Lipa, Aryeh Leib, and Joshua Heschel Shapira, sons of Samuel Abraham Abba Shapira, the printer in Slavuta.

 Abercius, Archbishop And Hieromartyr Of Zhitomir
On August 8, 1911 he was appointed rector of the Zhitomir (according to another source, Volhynia) theological seminary, being raised to the rank of archimandrite on August 21.
On June 27 (according to another source, June 29 / July 12, and according to a third source, July 28), 1915, he was consecrated Bishop of Ostrog, a vicariate of the Volhynia diocese, by Archbishop Eulogius of Volhynia, Bishop Thaddeus of Vladimir in Volhynia and Bishop Pachomius of Novgorod-Seversky.
He served in Zhitomir's Transfiguration cathedral and Theophany monastery (it was not a real monastery by that time, only the church remained open).
