Wang's influence was progressively reduced after the fall of 1938 and became negligible after the 1942-1943 rectification campaign in the CCP against "foreign dogmatism" and "foreign formalism"--euphemisms for Wang's penchant for Soviet Marxism.
Wang was elected member of the CPC politburo, although he was not a Commissioner of the Central Committee of CPC yet, this being a prerequisite for being a politburo member under the system proposed by Wang himself.
Wang, Kang and Chen were elected into the new politburo, with Wang as Secretary for the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPC which was in charge of the daily operation of CPC headquarters.

Zhou Yu's Train Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
However, Li did not limit herself to the work of her beau, as she also made her mark in a number of films by Chen Kaige, including 1993's "Farewell, My Concubine (Ba wang bie ji)", 1995's "Temptress Moon (Feng Yu)", and 1999's "The Emperor and the Assassin (Jing ke ci qin wang)".
To the disappointment of Li's fans, it would be another three years before the first lady of Chinese cinema would return to the silver screen, working with director Sun Zhou once again in 2002's "Zhou Yu's Train (Zhou Yu de huo che)", which has just seen an all-region DVD release.
Li is also radiant as ever, and despite the film's exasperating structure, she manages to transfix viewers with her earnest portrayal of a woman head-over-heels in love with an artist who won't commit-- not unlike Li's real-life 8-year romantic entanglement with Zhang Yimou.

Zhou Yu's Train - Rotten Tomatoes
Thus begins "Zhou Yu's Train," a modern tale of love and passion that is as intricate and delicate as the vase Zhou Yu (Gong Li) destroys — and, as directed by the accomplished Sun Zhou, equally as fragmented.
For Zhou Yu, we can see her emotions initially awakened by Chin Chang, a shy librarian who secretly yearns to be a poet (Tony Leung Ka Fai, a nine-time Hong Kong Film Award nominee and "Best Actor" winner in 1984 and 1993).
As Zhou Yu realizes that the relationship with Chen Ching is beginning to stagnate — he contemplates a teaching assignment in distant Tibet — she meets up with Zhang Jiang (vibrantly brought to life by newcomer Sun Honglei), the young farm animal doctor who takes such an interest in her ceramic vase.

Zhou Yu's Train - Movie Preview
When her last collaboration with director Sun Zhou - the social drama Breaking the Silence - got a special screening at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2000, Gong Li was in the most honoured position of all: she was president of the Festival Jury.
A winner of the Best Actress Award for her role in The Story of Qiu Ju at the Venice Film Festival in 1992 and a veteran of 21 films, Gong Li is probably the most widely recognised Chinese actress in the world, thanks to her role as one of the faces of L’Oréal.
Gong Li plays the title character, a skilled decorator who works in the Sanming ceramics factory and who appears to find her ideal soul-mate in librarian Chen Qing (played by Hong Kong star Tony Leung Ka Fai, first seen by western audiences in Jean-Jacques Annaud’s The Lover).

Zhou Yu's Train - Movie Preview
Notable among these are the worldly-wise bar owner Xiu (also played by Gong Li, having fun being the exact opposite of the romantic, dedicated Zhou Yu) and the unreliable veterinarian, Zhang Jiang (played by experienced Chinese TV actor Sun Hong Lei), who meets up with Zhou Yu on the train.
While Xiu has romantic designs on Chen Qing, Zhang Jiang is similarly drawn to Zhou Yu, and begins to sew the seeds of doubt in her mind by proving to her that Xian Hu, the ‘Lake of Fairies’ which features in Chen Qing’s poems, is little more than a half-empty pond.
The gamble that Sun Zhou takes in the film is in finally persuading us that, like Zhou Yu’s love for Chen Qing, Xian Hu is both a half-empty pond and what Chen Qing says it is: the ‘Lake of Fairies’.

OFFOFFOFF film review ZHOU YU'S TRAIN (Zhou Yu de Huo Che) Chinese movie by Sun Zhou with Gong Li, Tony Leung Ka Fai, ...
Our first glimpse of Zhou Yu (Gong Li) is on a train, where she's gingerly carrying a vase she's hand-painted for her boyfriend.
She meets Chen Qing (Tony Leung), a semi-reclusive poet and librarian, at a dance where he left her a poem ending with the line "If I vanish, you will hear nothing but silence." On the pretext of returning the briefcase he left behind, she tracks him to another town, and passion instantly strikes.
It's less the story of Zhou Yu and the Train On Which She Found Love than the story of an inventive director, cinematographer and film editor (Sun Zhou, Wang Yu and William Chang).

Chinese Movie Review | Zhou Yu's Train (2002) Gong Li, Tony Leung Ka Fai
During one of her trips to Ching, Zhou is accidentally bumped into by Dr. Zhang Jiang (Sun Honglei), a slightly unkempt but humbled veterinarian who breaks a vase she is carrying to her lover.
His persistence is enough to arouse her unexpected fascination, forcing Zhou to spend the rest of her days — so far as the picture is concerned — torn between two lovers in a wondrous dreamlike state.
Of course the best scenery of them all is Gong Li herself, who was recently in Wong-Kar Wai's "2046", and will soon be seen in Rob Marshall's "Memoirs of a Geisha" alongside Zhang Ziyi in both women's Hollywood debut.

They claim that the Kuomintang politician Wang Jingwei was the hidden ‘patron’ of Mao’s early Party career, which appears to be a misreading of the fact that Wang, who served briefly as head of the Nationalists, appointed Mao as well as other Communists to KMT posts during the time of the KMT-Communist united front.
Their source for this information is Han Suyin’s biography of Zhou, in which it is claimed that a senior Communist official overheard this remark while he was standing outside Chiang’s door.
Han – in any case an unreliable author – does report that Wang Bingnan overheard part of the conversation between Zhou and Chiang and that Zhou ‘assured Chiang that his son would return, that he was patriotic and undoubtedly wished his father to resist the invaders’.
