Working Papers-Slogans, Symbols, and Legitimacy: The Case of Wang Jingwei's Nanjing Regime

Wang was, without a doubt, aware of the growing centrality of fan Ri symbolism, but his political stance and alliances prevented him from being able to make use of this new component of the center.

 Zhou Dynasty Summary
The Zhou dynasty lasted longer than any other in Chinese history, and the use of iron was introduced to China during this time.
In the Chinese historical tradition, the rulers of the Zhou displaced the Shang and legitimized their rule by invoking the Mandate of Heaven, the notion that the ruler (the "son of heaven") governed by divine right (granted by the Supreme God of Heaven) but that his dethronement would prove that he had lost the mandate.
In the West, the Zhou period is often described as feudal because the Zhou's early rule invites comparison with medieval rule in Europe.

Zhou Yu's Train - Rotten Tomatoes
Thus begins "Zhou Yu's Train," a modern tale of love and passion that is as intricate and delicate as the vase Zhou Yu (Gong Li) destroys — and, as directed by the accomplished Sun Zhou, equally as fragmented.
For Zhou Yu, we can see her emotions initially awakened by Chin Chang, a shy librarian who secretly yearns to be a poet (Tony Leung Ka Fai, a nine-time Hong Kong Film Award nominee and "Best Actor" winner in 1984 and 1993).
As Zhou Yu realizes that the relationship with Chen Ching is beginning to stagnate — he contemplates a teaching assignment in distant Tibet — she meets up with Zhang Jiang (vibrantly brought to life by newcomer Sun Honglei), the young farm animal doctor who takes such an interest in her ceramic vase.

However, even a mediocre collection put together by a man who, like Wang Zhen, appears to have been a fairly ordinary merchant could be valuable as evidence for the diffusion of artistic practices that at this time were still dominated to a large extent by the nonmercantile educated elite.

But Zhou still gets on that damn train, which takes her to Chen and to what she thinks is love.

 Riddle 8 Part I
The "Duo Yi" chapter of Yi Zhou shu has Wu Wang after his victory (in 1040) saying to Zhou Gong that "Heaven's withholding its favor from Yin has been going on for sixty years, since before I was born"; i.e., from Ji Li's death on, Zhou had not regarded Shang's rule as sanctioned by Heaven.
I had misread the Shiji: The shijia chapters say that the Conquest was in Wu Wang's 11th year; the "Zhou Benji" says that the Zhou army had crossed the Yellow River by the 12th month of the 11th year, and that the victory was won on jiazi in the 2nd month.
Actually, Wen Wang did die in 1050, and (as I realized later) the Conquest was not in a "12th year." Seeing that this argument was unsatisfactory, I returned to 1045 as Conquest date in my publications from 1985 through 1989.

His persistence is enough to arouse her unexpected fascination, forcing Zhou to spend the rest of her days — so far as the picture is concerned — torn between two lovers in a wondrous dreamlike state.

Zhou acknowledges that the U.S. press coverage of the incident reported that the children "gave a false appearance." As Kissinger later recalled, Nixon handled Zhou's admission of a "cover up" gracefully and then warned him that U.S. journalists and Congressmen could "poison" Sino-American relations.
