  Zhu Bajie
Zhu Bajie (豬八戒 aka 豬悟能) is one of the three helpers of Xuan Zang in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
Zhu Bajie was originally a general in Heaven before being banished for his misbehaviour.
At the end of the novel, most of Zhu Bajie's fellow pilgrims achieve enlightenment and become buddhas or arhats[?], but he does not; although much improved, he is still too much a creature of his base desires.

Zhu Bajie (豬八戒 WG: Chu Pa-chieh aka 豬悟能 Zhu Wuneng or Chu Wu-neng) is one of the three helpers of Xuanzang in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West.
His Buddhist name Zhu Wuneng (豬悟能) given by bodhisattva Guan Yin means "pig (reincarnate) who is aware of ability", a reference to the fact that he values himself insomuch as to forget his own grisly appearance.
Unlike Zhu Bajie, he is not as important to the plot, especially in the later part of the Dragon Ball manga (known as Dragon Ball Z in the United States).

"Zhu Bajie" literally means as in the three Chinese characters: "Pig" "Eight" "Queer" but this Zhu Bajie claims he had been currently in China and he talks like he dosen't know enough about America to make contradictory comments in order to distract or to downgrade an intellectual discussion.
Zhu Bajie is a character in the fantasy epic, "Journey to the West" and (a couple years ago) was voted the ideal husband by 70% of the readers of a women's magazine.

Zhu Bajie is perhaps the most complex and developed character in the novel.
The novel makes use of constant alchemical imagery and Zhu Bajie is most closely linked to the Wood element, as seen by another one of his nicknames, Wood Mother (木母).
At the end of the novel, most of Zhū Bājiè's fellow pilgrims achieve enlightenment and become buddhas or arhats, but he does not; although much improved, he is still too much a creature of his base desires.

 Insulting the Monkey King
Actually, pulling out plot elements from Journey to the West for adaptation, or even changing the gender of characters in the original novel during the course of adaptation, is nothing too shocking.
An example of the former is China's first paper-cut cartoon, Zhu Bajie eating watermelon; its plot was not directly connected to Journey to the West, but rather was taken from a folk tale.
"His hands held out a rake like dragon claws, a half-moon bow circled about his waist." Zhu Bajie had a bow at his waist - he is the only bow-carrier among those in the band.
