Zhuyin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zhuyin Zimu was renamed to Zhuyin Fuhao in April 1930.
On the Chinese mainland, Zhuyin Fuhao was superseded by the pinyin system promulgated by the People's Republic of China, although the pronunciation of words in standard dictionaries are given in both pinyin and Zhuyin.
Zhuyin and Pinyin are based on the same Mandarin pronunciations, hence there is a mostly 1-to-1 mapping between the two systems.

The zhuyin consists of a few dozens of letters that are modified from the Chinese characters, such as ㄅ, ㄆ, ㄇ, and ㄈ.
As a matter of fact, zhuyin's tone marks are predecessors of those in pinyin.
The reason for the success of zhuyin is precisely that the spelling and non-spelling elements are represented by different sets of symbols, which facilitates smooth spelling process, hence is preferred by native speakers of Chinese.
