Zichmni is the name of an explorer-prince appearing in a 1558 book by Nicolo Zeno of Venice, allegedly based on letters and a map written around the year 1400 by the author's ancestors, the brothers Nicolo and Antonio Zeno.
The letters upon which the book are based alledgedly provide a first-hand account by the Zeno brothers of a voyage of exploration undertaken in the year 1398 by a prince named Zichmni, who crossed the North Atlantic to Greenland and possibly reached North America.
The authenticity of the account of the voyage is highly controversial, and many historians consider either the 1558 book, or the letters upon which it is based, to be a hoax.

On the contrary, historians have established the fact that Nicolò spent the greater part of his life in the public service of Venice, including the years when he is supposed to have been with Zichmni.
The most widely accepted identification is that made by J. Forster in 1784 when he argued that Zichmni was actually Henry Sinclair, 1st earl of the Orkneys, who was born in 1350 and died in 1404.
Even if one overlooks the absurd contents of the Zeno narrative, there is not a shred of evidence, as F. Lucas conclusively showed in 1898, to suggest that Henry Sinclair made any transatlantic voyages (not to mention the discovery of Nova Scotia) or that he had either Nicolò or Antonio at his court.

Re: Henry Sinclair's 'voyage' to America
Furthermore any Orkney connection depends entirely on believing that achief by the name of 'Zichmni' was none other than Henry Sinclair, the name 'Zichmni' being optimistically interpreted as a rendering either of 'Sinclair' or 'D'Orkney'.
If Earl Henry was actually Zichmni who playsa central part in the story, it is somewhat surprising that Orkney is neither mentioned ijn the narrative nor shown on the Zeno map, although the name 'Orcades' had been universally known ever since Roman times.
As well as the voyage to America, the narrative credits Zichmni with campaigns supposedly fought in islands which have been identified as Shetland and/or Faroe, and this adds an entirely fictional element to Henry's Viking image.
