That may be the case, but the legendary showman could have drafted his dream show a little better than by pooling into the talent pools at MGM alone.
Behind “Follies” was probably the entire writers department at MGM, who couldn’t even come up with one decent story.
“Follies” is one of those musicals that wants to be a part of the greats at MGM with “Singin’ in the Rain”, “The Wizard of Oz” and “An American in Paris”, but cannot get past the stages of longingly pressing its nose up against a glass palette window.

The Works of Author Adele Kenny
There is, however, another type of folly – the architectural folly – that captures the imagination and delights the eye with spectacularly curious, idiosyncratic, and sometimes outrageously odd structures.
The concept of the architectural folly originated during the eighteenth century when affluent estate owners considered it de rigueur to have ruined buildings peering through the vast expanses of their landscapes.
Architectural follies may seem the height of conceit and thoughtless indulgence when considered within the historical context of an era in which abject poverty was endemic: the cost involved in the construction of a single folly might have fed several starving families for many months or saved others from the privations of the workhouse.

Born in Oklahoma, he first appeared in the theater in 1905 when he played the part of a cowboy doing rope tricks; Rogers began making asides to the audience, and soon his skill as a monologist eclipsed his talents with a lasso.
He appeared in various versions of the Follies (where he formed close friendships with entrepreneur Flo Ziegfeld and fellow comics W. Fields and Eddie Cantor) from 1915 to 1925, and he changed his patter nightly to comment on what he had read in the day's newspapers--an innovation at the time.

Funny Girl Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Streisand was already a stage and singing star when producer Ray Stark tapped her to reprise her Broadway role of Fanny Brice for the screen adaptation of Funny Girl, the movie that sent her into the stratosphere.
Funny Girl is ostensibly a biography of vaudeville star Brice from her beginnings as the chorus girl fired because of her skinny legs and the fact that she doesn't "look like the rest of the girls" to her rise as the premier attraction of the legendary Ziegfield Follies.
Though she receives fine support from Sharif, Walter Pidgeon as Florenz Ziegfield, and Kay Medford as Fanny's mother, the success of this nearly two-and-a-half-hour epic rests firmly on Streisand's slim shoulders.
