Alkaloids found in Zigadenus are notorious for poisoning of sheep and occasionally cattle and horses.
Camas, also spelled quamash, is the Amerindian name for similar, blue-flowered western plants that bear bulbs relished for food.

The Deathcamases or Star Lilies are the genus Zigadenus of flowering plants.
Placed by older authors in the family Liliaceae, they are now regarded by modern taxonomy (for example the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group) as members of the family Melanthiaceae.
Zigadenus venenosus (called ałtsíniitsoh, literally "big mariposa lily") was used by the Navajo for coyote bites.

There are about a dozen species of Zigadenus in the U.S. all of which are poisonous.
Perennial herb from bulbs, 20 to 120 cm tall; leaves are basal, to 30 cm long and 1 cm wide; flowers borne in elongate racemes, yellowish white.
Should be distinguished from wild onions (Allium sp.).
