The region of Zilina adjoins Poland to the north and the Czech Republic to the west.
Zilina is a city located in the center of Northwest Slovakia at the confluence of the Vah and the Kysuca.
Further to the east of the administrative region of Zilina are the cities of Ruzomberok and Liptovsky Mikulas, the latter located in the valley of Liptov, situated between the High and Low Tatras.

The formal declaration of Slovakia's autonomy occurred on 6 October in Zilina, at the site of the Catholic House where the plaque was supposed to have been dedicated on 14 March 2000.
