In 1884, at age 18, Zilker, who had left his native Indiana to seek his fortune, came to Austin with only 50 cents in his pocket and got a job at an ice plant, which he eventually bought.
Shortly after Zilker bought the land in 1901, he built a small concrete pool and amphitheater for members of his Elks Club organization, at the site of one of the three springs, where people had gathered for centuries.
Between 1917 and 1934, A.J. Zilker donated his land along the south bank of the Colorado in stages, to the Public Free Schools of Austin on the condition that the city of Austin buy the tract from the public schools for inflated prices.

Seems to me that Zilker is a great venue for these sorts of events, but their timing needs to be respectful of the sorrounding community.
Zilker was perfect—could not have been 15 feet away from the stage in the crowd and the Rolling Stones ALIVE AND IN THE FLESH in Memorial Stadium.
Zilker is a wonderful venue for these events and I’m ashamed of my neighborhood association (Zilker) for holding the City and event planners hostage over hosting these events at the park.

The north side of Zilker Park makes a great starting point for a walk on the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail.
The only problem I have with Zilker is that the playground is extremely small for such a large park not to mention the abundance of traffic.The park doesn't have a seesaws, not enough swings, merry go round etc...
While I've noticed that most parks have done away with the things mentioned above it seems that there would be other things in place of them.
