De partnergemeente van Zillebeke ligt dicht bij de stad Lahr, in de nabijheid van de Rijn en de Franse grens, op een dertigtal kilometer van Straatsburg.
Zillebeke en Seelbach tellen elk ongeveer 5.000 inwoners.
Zillebeke heeft een Katharinakerk met een eeuwenoude devotie voor de Heilige Catharina, terwijl Seelbach sedert 1455 jaarlijks een Katharinamarkt houdt rond het weekend van 25 november.

 Zillebeke
A wartime cemetery where men were buried in the ruins of a tile factory, it was utterly destroyed by shellfire.
In the churchyard in the centre of Zillebeke is a small plot of British graves, many dating from the earliest days of the First Battle of Ypres in October 1914.
This was a wartime cemetery, but greatly enlarged by postwar battlefield clearance and bringing in men from small scattered cemeteries in the Salient.

Zillebeke Churchyard is located 3 Km east of Ieper town centre on the Maaldestedestraat, a road leading from the Meenseweg (N8), connecting Ieper to Menen.
The churchyard itself is located 1.8 Km along the Maaldestedestraat on the left hand side of the road, within the village of Zillebeke.
The commune of Zillebeke contains many Commonwealth cemeteries as the front line trenches ran through it during the greater part of the First World War.

The arms are those of the last Lords of Zillebeke, the Canton family.
In 1740 the family, Viscounts of Winnezeele, acquired the estate of Zillebeke.

Hooge Crater Cemetery was begun by the 7th Division Burial Officer early in October 1917.
It contained originally 76 graves, in Rows A to D of Plot I, but was greatly increased after the Armistice when graves were brought in from smaller cemeteries in the area and from the battlefields of Zillebeke, Zantvoorde and Gheluvelt.
There are now 5,922 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery.

The small village 't Hooge and the little larger Zillebeke, astride the Meense weg (Menin Road) just outside of Ieper (Ypres) were a valuable price in the Great War of 1914-1918.
On the remains of a dugout near some leftover tranches at Zillebeke, in the early morning of a cold winters day, I saw what I share with you in the attached picture.
Let it be known to everyone: there's hope in the strangest places.

This map was taken from the official history of the 1/4th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment (City of Leicester Battalion) and shows fairly clearly the trenches occupied in the summer of 1915.
He had a lucky escape, learning afterwards that he had only survived because when rescuers arrived his feet were sticking out of the debris and they pulled him out!
