Zillions of Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zillions of Games is a versatile, expandable computer gaming engine, which runs on Windows PCs and allows users to create a huge number of abstract strategy board game or puzzle in the Zillions format.
Zillions of Games is so called because of its potential to play a nearly infinite number of user-programmed games.
In the past, game designers have sometimes failed to think through all the implications of their rules, thereby leaving some details to be ruled on later or even post-mortem, such as the details concerning en passant in Parton's Alice Chess.

 Review of Zillions-of-Games
Zillions of Games is a program for the PC, running under Windows'95, Windows'98, and Windows NT, which enables the user to play a large number of different board games.
Setting up a game with Zillions of Games of one of the games that it plays is very easy, although it seems not possible to look on the internet whether there are others that want to play to you: you must make an appointment with someone else in a different manner, e.g., by email.
Strength of the AI It seems really to depend on the particular game how strong the Zillions of Games program is. On the average, the program is rather strong, and in many cases, when I used a few seconds per move and a setting to Expert strength, it is much stronger than I am.

Talk:Chess variant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While ZoG deserves mention, it is not, in my opinion as a variant designer, the reason for "the total number has been increasing constantly and rapidly." Rather, I suspect the existence of the website http://www.chessvariants.com/ has had more to do with this increase than ZoG.
Nonetheless, the ZOG program has been a great catalyst to the development of many new games (in addition to the implementation of many old games), some of which may be of higher quality than even possible for popular, traditional chess variants.
I think the usual way of playing the game was with a chess clock, and capturing didn't start until all the pieces were on the board, but moving the pieces that were already on the board (where 1 piece counts as 1 move, in lieu of a parachute drop) was permitted.

Each game state that Zillions examines needs to have its own copy of the values of all variables that are persistent from state to state, so that there is not a unique copy of so-called "global" variables.
Zillions has to deal with a large number of parallel universes, each cloned from a preceding universe, and each with its own copy of the state of every persistent variable.
Similarly, Zillions should flag an error if a move is generated whose sole effect is to change the value of variables without altering the kind, owner, or number of piece(s) on any position (counting the pool as a special position).

Math Games: A Zillion Connection Games
Zillions of Games is a computer gaming engine for Windows PCs that debuted in 1999.
The peculiarity of this game is that the number of squares a man may move in a given direction is determined by counting the number of men of either color along that line of action.

 Zillions of Games v1
Zillions of Games is a fascinating product, using a powerful universal gaming engine to allow you to play any game or solve any puzzle for which a rules file has been written.
The games' rules files are very small, so when you download new games from the web site each ZIP file is transferred almost instantly (assuming the game uses images and sounds already part of the Zillions package).
As if the fun you'll have playing over 300 games that don't crash your computer and don't empty your wallet isn't enough, Zillions is also educational, with a brief history and background of every game, not to mention exercising and pumping up your brain through the use of logic, strategy, clarity of thought and memory.

The game is divided into two phases, the first of which, players alternate choosing their pieces from a pool of available pieces, and then the second phase where they play against each other with the selected pieces.
This is definitely not a game your typical 8-year-old is going to pick up and play in a couple of hours, but as the author points out, this is a large variant contest, and the complexity lies in the number of different pieces and not in arcane rules or rule exceptions.
Zillions is still convinced that a swap is a capture in some sense, so I've had to change the losing condition to be no King left on the board (ie.

Zillions of Games is arguably the best game engine in existence, at least for period games.
A very large collection of DOS Shareware games can be found at Tommy's Toys, with several period games scattered throughout (including the only computer versions of Piquet, Gleek and Primero I am aware of, and a brand-new implementation of Rythmomachy).

This is an impressive, well thought-out collection of chess-related games all of which are played upon boards which, with the pieces set to their opening positions, maintain perfect bilateral, geometrical symmetry via vertical and horizontal axes.
