Tiger II Zimmerit Review by Brett Green (Mirage Hobby 1/35)
Good looking zimmerit pattern; effective use of media (resin is highly appropriate for depicting zimmerit); drop-fit replacements for contoured parts including turret and rear hull plate; excellent fit; easy construction; perfect casting.
Zimmerit was an anti-magnetic coating that was trowelled onto many German vehicles as part of the factory production process from 1943 to late 1944 as a defence against magnetic mines.
The Zimmerit for the hull sides, forward lower hull and glacis plate are all supplied on a very thin wafer of resin.

German engineers did some studies on how giving inoffensive this weapons, arriving to conclusion that using a repelling magnetic paste applied on the armour of the tanks the mines couldn't be attached.
This paste called zimmerit was alike to cement, was applied on the tanks with rake giving it so an rough appearance.
From summer of the 1943 until the 1944 the zimmerit became a standard characteristic in the panzer gone out by factories.

King Tiger Henschel Turret with Zimmerit Review by Cookie Sewell (DML 1/72)
This paste – "zimmerit" – was found in many places and used for about eighteen months before the Germans gave up on it.
All take time and all have their backers, but the bottom line is that the modeler has to do this himself.
While the shortcomings of the kits themselves are a moot point, the main problem was that if the appliques were not used the model was underscale, and if they were, it looked, well, like stuck-on styrene panels.

 Zimmerit
Zimmerit was applied to the armour plates in an even layer, which would then be seperated into small squares of approximately five by five mm., after which it should be left to bry in four hours.
The Zimmerit would have either worn of these places quickly, or wouldn't have had any effect, as the magnetic mines could't have bene placed on the locations (such as the turret), or wouldn't damage the vehicle (such as armour skirts and lamps) anyway.
Zimmerit is still often seen on turrets, and sometimes on armour skirts, regardless, but rarely if ever on tools or tracks.

What I was after was a finish that gave the impression of zimmerit that is appropriate for the scale, rather than an exact scale representation.
This means that it is difficult not to end up with 1:35 scale zimmerit on a 1:76 model when using putty.
When I was making the zimmerit finish, I removed the track changing cable moulded on the left side of the hull.

 Shaped Charges
Zimmerit consisted of about 40% Barium Sulphate, 15% of ocre/sand pigment (=color), 10% Zinc Sulphide and 10% glue mixed with sawdust; the remaining 25% were Mowilith, a polyvinyl-acetate.
The Zimmerit had no armor value whatsoever and therefore didn't really affect the mechanism of the shaped charges themselves, it was simply meant as a thick layer of nonmagnetic paste so that the magnets of attached hollow charges wouldn't hold.
After the german collapse a team was sent to germany to investigate the manufacturinmg of Zimmerit for the possible use onm british tanks in the Pacific against the still fighting japanese.

The thin resin zimmerit has sections for the lower and upper hull sides, glacis and lower hull front plate plus the turret walls and sides of the gun mount with the solid resin replacement parts for the rear hull plate, storage boxes and exhausts plus the gun mantlet and glacis MG cover.
The zimmerit detail is a very good representation of the style seen on these Panthers while the solid resin parts have similar zimmerit coating and are nicely detailed with the exhaust pipes for example hollowed out back to the curve in the pipe for good definition.
Fitting the resin zimmerit will take some care as you first need the lightly sand the backing resin from the parts and this is best done by putting the resin film face down on a flat surface and lightly sand with fine wet and dry taking care not to damage the zimmerit.

In times Zimmerit was used, German army used several camouflage patterns composed from 3 colours: Dark Yellow (the basic coating of vehicle), Red Brown and Olive Green (complementary camouflaging tones).
Zimmerit was not applied only in the regular pattern; some places with round edges should be girdled in the way very similar to the real method of application.
Let’s suppose that Zimmerit was applied successfuly and you can move to the second part of this tutorial, creation of camouflage pattern.

If any panel is only partly covered by the zimmerit, mask off the part of the panel adjoining where the zimmerit ends (but remember to remove the tape before the glue dries).
Unfortunately the zimmerit set did not include panels for the cowlings on the front glacis plate, which were often covered in zimmerit.
If the edge of the PE zimmerit sits proud of the kit, this problem can be masked by pressing the flat side of a hobby knife blade on the overhand to bend the overhand down onto the adjoining panel of the kit (see photo).

DML 1/72 Sd.Kfz.171 Panther G Early Production with Zimmerit
This is the third major 1/72 scale kit in which DML has done the dirty work for the German armor fan, namely molded the "Zimmerit" paste right onto the model.
All sides required to carry zimmerit do as DML has used its "slide molding" technique to replicate it, and this shows to good advantage on the one-piece stern plate with stowage bins.
The rest of the kit is similar to the original one but replaces the "heft" hull made of white metal with a normal styrene one, so normal kit assembly can take place.

Zimmerit: A Saga Continua   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The present approach, started from an idea from Pedro Oliveira, a fellow modeller, that was experimenting with replicating Zimmerit in 1/35 (disgusting…), using modelling clay (the light grey variety) and a screw driver to mark the clay in the "classic pattern" (the vertical columns) in a Sturmpanzer IV.
In the case of the Panther, this represents at least 30% of the "zimmerited" produced vehicles, and, most important, will mean a lot of long and almost panels, few round corners and a few tools areas.
First, before starting to replicate Zimmerit, study some photos specially of the intended subject, there are some good sources of photos in the Web, just have a look at the links in this Site or on the Missing Links or AFV news.

How to Apply Zimmerit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Zimmerit was a coating which the Germans applied to many of their armored vehicles during the mid-to-late portion of World War II, in order to defeat magnetic and adhesive anti-tank explosives.
They produce several different patterns of zimmerit for each vehicle, as well as "factory-fresh" and "weathered and chipped" versions of each pattern.
Note: Since zimmerit was discontined in 9/44, the latest versions of German tanks usually are not covered with zimmerit.

The number of ridges of Zimmerit ranged from 20 to 26, with the most common number being 22 rows.

The brass exhaust shields rival the zimmerit as a highlight of the kit, while the metal for the tow cables is surprisingly effective when mated with the cable ends.
While the zimmerit and some of the other details are very nicely detailed, other aspects of the kit are rather clunky.
The zimmerit and the exhaust shields are amazing, but the omission of the track-changing cable and spare track links counteract part of that, as do the soft or clunky details.
