ZINCITE Chapter 22. Oxides and hydroxides
Zincite is the least abundant of the three principal ore minerals (willemite, franklinite, and zincite), but is the richest zinc-ore mineral of all here and worldwide.
Zincite is mobile under certain conditions, and it occurs as veins (Figures 12-7 and 12-8), coatings, blebs (Figures 12-14 and 12-17), and inclusions in other minerals.
Zincite also occurs as finger-like masses (Figure 12-17), recrystallized masses (Figures 12-35, 12-36, and 12-37), and large, distorted, conical masses in calcite at both deposits (Figure 22-12), as well as in druses and varied vein assemblages which clearly postdate the common ore and in other habits.

 Zincite
Measurements of natural crystals of zincite are few and poor, and the generally accepted axial ratio for zinc oxide is based on artificial crystals.
Zincite is commonly massive and granular, foliated, or compact.
Zincite was the first of the remarkable minerals constituting these deposits to excite scientific interest, and its description and analysis by Dr. Bruce in 1810 (1) constitute one of the earliest mineralogical investigations made in this country.

Zincite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zincite is the mineral form of zinc oxide (ZnO).
In nature its crystal form is rare, with the exception of Franklin, New Jersey, an area also known for its fluorescent minerals.
The zincite found in Franklin, New Jersey is red colored (mostly due to iron and manganese) and associated with willemite and franklinite.

Zincite is the reddish brown material in Franklinite.
Natural zincite is usually very deep reddish, almost fl, flaky, crumbly clumps of crystals in the Franklinite, from grain of sand size to big, solid rocks.
Zincite is used as a detector in a rock-rock junction of it and chalcopyrite (aka peacock ore, fairly common).

Our Zincite comes from Poland, the only source in the world for Zincite crystals of this size.
They formed by an unexpected "accident" where the conditions became just right within large smoke stacks at a Zinc smelting facility in Poland, forming these fantastic crystals which grow attached to the insides of the smoke stacks.

To understand how various adsorbates, including chloride, citrate, and hexamethylene tetramine, might influence crystal growth and morphology, we developed representative periodic supercell models for three zincite growth surfaces, (100), (101), and (001).
Binding enthalpies are derived from the energy difference between the optimized configuration and one in which the adsorbate is appreciably removed from the surface.
This result supports the premise that preferential binding of adsorbates, acting as growth inhibitors, may be used to design different zincite morphologies.

Both zincite and franklinite are highly colored, the zincite possibly by the manganese ion (Palache et al., 1944), the franklinite primarily by the ferric ion.
Both the ferrous and ferric ions are primarily responsible for the fall- off in reflectivity towards the blue and for the crossover for different particle size samples.
