Topic: Zine

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  What's a 'zine'?
Zines are publications done for the love of doing them, not to make a profit or a living.
Zines can be found at your funkier bookstores (especially in larger cities), and also at infoshops or zine libraries.
Most zine publishers, between work, family, and other real life commitments, don't have as much time to spend on their zines as they might like, but if you don't hear back within a couple of months, send the zinester a polite follow-up note.

 Zine World: Zine World
Zine World is written, edited, published, and mailed out by an all-volunteer staff who believe free speech is for everyone, not just for giant corporations.
In addition to the reviews, Zine World covers news nobody else does: When publishers are brought up on charges for what they've published, when kids are kicked out of school for creating a zine, we try to spread the word, letting our readers know what they can do to help.
Pronounced "zeens," zines are one of the staples of the underground press.

 Zine Summary
Zines are a response to a society where consuming culture and entertainment that others have produced for you is the norm.
Zines also constitute another type of reaction to living in a consumer society: Publishing a zine is an act of creating ones' own culture.
Zines are written in a variety of formats, from computer-printed text to comics to handwritten text (a famous example being the eponymous work of Aaron Cometbus).

Zines such as Bamboo Girl, Worse Than Queer, Action Girl Online, Digital Chicana, and Blackgirl Stories provide not only print versions but also virtual tours inside the minds and hearts of women taking their passion for zines on-line for wider access.

Although zines, a rich and democratic form of self-expression that range from scholarly treatises on diverse issues to wildly creative artworks, have been around for a long time, few libraries have yet to begin collecting and preserving them.
We have a second range of zines, designated as "Rare" in CLIO, that is housed in the Barnard Archives, and is meant to be a preservation/research collection.
The Zine Collection is housed within the library, so our hours are the same as those for the rest of the 2nd floor.
