zinf   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Zinf is a free audio player, released under the GNU General Public License.
Zinf is a continuation of the 'FreeAmp\' project and uses the same source code.
Use of the name "FreeAmp" had to be discontinued due to trademark issues: AMP is a trademark of PlayMedia Systems, Inc. "Zinf" is a recursive acronym; it stands for "Zinf is not FreeA*p".

Zinf uses less than 1% of the CPU.
Zinf does the simple things very well, but it also has room for improvement.
I remember wishing for a Zinf for Mac, because the eMusic dowloader for Mac was very flaky in those days (but it has significantly improved since then).

Zinf is an audio player for Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Zinf version 2.2.1 running on Microsoft Windows operating system is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the management of the.pls playlist file.
CVE-2004-0964: Buffer overflow in Zinf 2.2.1 on Windows, and other older versions for Linux, allows remote attackers or local users to execute arbitrary code via certain values in a.pls file.

But the interface for managing the playlist and editing metadata tags and other stuff beyond the play/stop controls has always been awkward, and it's started crashing on certain of my MP3 files, so I started looking around for a new player.
I tried all the non-KDE offerings in Debian, and settled on "zinf" which is actually what FreeAmp is now called.
Zinf has a nice GTK2 GUI, and the file management is iTunes like -- it makes a database of Artist/Album/Song rather than just the files -- but it's WinAmp like in that there is a "current playlist" you can modify.

 Edgy-Penguins - "Linux for Non-Geeks" - Zinf
Well, tastes vary by user, and Zinf is different enough to warrant interest, Zinf is in many ways a middle-ground between XMMS and Rhythmbox.
As you can see, Zinf is bigger and easier to read than XMMS, and, redundant as it may well be to say, much smaller than Rhythmbox.
Zinf is available from the DAG repositories, so you will need to add that reository to your Synaptic repository list if you haven't done so already.

Zinf Is Not FreeAmp, but it isn't any good, either
It's just as ugly as ever -- there are three themes which come with it, which range from unusable (``ZinfClassic'') through merely aggravating (``Zinf'') to possibly the ugliest pixels ever comitted to screen in the name of a user interface (``Aquatica'').
Another fucking annoying thing about Zinf: when you try to play an HTTP stream, it doesn't use the Content-Type: to figure out what sort of stream it is.
A brief look at the code suggests that it would be a bitch to change it, which suggests that whoever wrote the thing in the first place was asleep at the switch.

The Zinf project, however, is looking for new project leaders, programmers, documenters, and user - support people.

So, the new home of the old FreeAmp codebase will now live on: http://www.zinf.org I have applied a few patches, fixed a couple of bugs, changed the name, removed the Bitzi/MusicBrainz/Relatable stuff that wasn't really working anyway, and slimmed down the codebase a bit.
