  PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Commelinidae -- Spring 1999
There is no doubt that the Bromeliaceae are distinct from the bulk of the Zingiberidae, and their removal to a basal position within the Commelinidae is full supportable as demonstrated long ago by Dahlgren & Ramussen (1983) and remains unquestioned even in light of the rbcL data.
Inclusion of the remaining members of the Zingiberidae is less clear.
While the Bromeliales and Zingiberidales formed his Zingiberidae, Philydraceae, Pontederiaceae and Haemodoraceae are placed in the Liliales along with Velloziaceae.

Taxonomy of Flowering Plants - LECTURE NOTES - Spring, 1998
Elements of the Zingiberidae (2 orders, 9 families, 3,800 species) are often associated with order of the Commelinidae and Liliidae.
Cronquist's treatment deals with the fact that these plants are "discordant" when so treated, i.e., the Bromeliales does not 'fit' well within the Commelinidae and the Zingiberales are a bit anomalous within the context of the Liliidae.
