Born Zinka Kunç in Zagreb, Milanov began her vocal training with the Wagnerian soprano Milka Ternina (the first Tosca at Covent Garden and the Met).
She did not come into her own vocally until she was in her forties (an age at which many singers of later generations started to fail vocally), and gave her final Met performance when she was 60.
In addition to being a great singing artist, Milanov was a fine teacher, looking not only to train young voices and help “mend” older voices, but committed also to a rebirth of the singing art.

Zinka Milanov is a singer I came to in my youth, but through her recordings, as I never had the occasion to hear her on stage, nor to hear her in any Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts.
milanov, not atypical of the second golden age of opera, possessed a callas-esque temperment and a voice of astonishing depth.
Zinka Milanov represents the type of voice current writers describe as "from the golden age", and indeed this recording offers an invaluable document from the Metropolitan's roster of the 1940's and 50's.

As the leading dramatic soprano at the Met during her time, she was entrusted with this great role at a time when there was no one able to sing it.
Milanov does some very beautiful things here, and in several instances she reveals aspects of her art barely hinted at in any of her later commercial recordings made for RCA in the 1950's.
The voice is frequently ravishing in tone, and most surprisingly, she injects a passion and venom into her interpretation (especially in the last act) that one would have not imagined her capable in her later years.

Zinka Milanov, heard here early in her career (she's also on the 1940 performance and she's better there), is in secure, lovely voice, particularly (as we might guess) in long, pianissimo passages.
In 1940 she sounds more like the Milanov we know; here she can be a bit light and tentative (in middle and low passages), if bright-voiced.

Biography - Zinka Milanov (Bio 1653)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
With her stately stage deportment and unflappable sense of her own greatness, Milanov was one of the last great divas, quick to tell the story of admirers who came to see her in La Gioconda just to hear her float her famous pianissimo B flat at the end of the first act.
She was born Zinka Kunc (koontz) and used that name until she married actor Predrag Milanov in 1937.
Her opera debut was as Leonora in Il trovatore in Ljubljana in 1927, and became a lead soprano with the Zagreb Opera, often traveling to sing in other parts of Europe.

Croatian-born Milanov followed a well-trodden route from provincial opera houses to the German Theatre in Prague, in 1936, and thence to Vienna where her debut was conducted by Bruno Walter.
Her Casta diva is beautifully done though the lower part of the voice does sound just a shade matronly but it was a voice she could scale down with perfect precision and dramatic verisimilitude, as witness Mira, o Norma.
Apparently Milanov always reckoned Tacea la notte placida with Margaret Roggero one of her finest records and it is indeed a thriller.
