Collector's guide to the mica group. - Encyclopedia.com
The several zinnwaldite species are less common than the other trioctahedral micas and typically occur in granite pegmatites and in cassiterite-bearing pneumatolytic (high-temperature gas-filled) veins.
For the collector, zinnwaldites are occasionally attractive in their own right and often have interesting associates such as cassiterite, wolframite, topaz, scheelite, tourmaline, and fluorite.

ZINNWALDITE (Potassium Lithium Iron Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide Fluoride)
Zinnwaldite is a very rare member of the mica group and is not well known even by mineral collectors.
Zinnwaldite is darker colored than typical muscovite but lighter than phlogopite or biotite The dark color and density in the three iron containing micas increase with an increase in the iron and magnesium content.
Zinnwaldite is difficult to distinguish from the other micas at least by ordinary methods and lacallity and enviroment are keys to identification.

Occurrence of Primary Almandine-Spessartine-Rich Garnet and Zinnwaldite Phenocrysts in a Neogene Rhyolite on the Island ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Abstract: Primary almandine and spessartine-rich garnet and zinnwaldite phenocrysts occur along with feldspar (plagioclase and sanidine) phenocrysts, in the rhyolite of Profitis Ilias, which is located on the SE coast of the island of Chios, Greece.
Apparently, both zinnwaldite and spessartine-rich garnet can be generated as primary phases from a granite melt enriched in volatile constituents at low P-T.
The extensive and deep faulting in the broad eastern Aegean lithosphere section would have facilitated the rapid ascent of that volatile-enriched granite melt, the parent of the Profitis Ilias rhyolite.

It is much the most kaolinized area in Cornwall and for this reason it has been realised that some of the textural variation reflects the presence of several distinct intrusions.
These changes are the manifestation of a reduction in the K2O/Na2O ratio, a substantial increase in Li2O, a reduction in MgO, redistribution of Fe and Al, and an increased importance of B and F, all brought about by the intrusion of the Type E granite which Type D surrounds.
These are a consequence of the high volatile content of Type E magma which is believed to have been derived at depth by a complex differentiation and reaction process.

Although the infrared spectrum of zinnwaldite has been described before, near infrared and Raman spectroscopy have not been used so far to study this mineral.
Two overlapping OH-stretching modes can be observed around 3550-3650 cm-1, in agreement with a broad band in the IR around 3450 cm-1 and a complex band around 3630 cm-1.

Inside that is a wall zone which has more coarse grained feldspars and quartz.
There are then any number of intermediate zones which may contain many less common minerals such as beryl, zinnwaldite, or pollucite, to name a few examples of the many types of minerals found in the intermediate zones.
The unifying factor that causes these minerals to crystallize in a pegmatite is that they all have a crystal radius which is too large to fit in with the parent pluton, and often have an ionic charge which prevents bonding.
