The Narrows lies north of, and upstream of, the main Zion Canyon.
A mile (2 km) south of the Mouth of the Narrows is the Temple of Sinawava, where the river enters main Zion Canyon, a flat-floored, quarter to half-mile (400 to 800 m) wide canyon with sandstone mountains on each side, their summits 2400 feet above.
The hike of The Narrows is one of the premier hikes on the Colorado Plateau.

In 1937 the Kolob Canyon region was designated as a national monument, and it was incorporated into Zion National park in 1956.
Zion Canyon is especially popular with hikers and drivers, who follow the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive to its terminus at the Temple of Sinawava and the Gateway to the Narrows, and then return to take the Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, with its tunnel, to the top of the canyon.
Most of the park's 147,000 acres are located within Washington County; however, the extreme eastern section of the park is in Kane County, while the park's northern tip extends into Iron County.

I had the opportunity to visit Zion National Park for the first time in October of 1998.
While hiking along the Virgin River through the Narrows in Zion Canyon on my second full day in the park, I experienced a level of intense and absolute beauty that I hadn't seen or felt with such magnitude since my first visit to Delicate Arch over eleven years earlier.
As I drove through the park late in the afternoon on my way to my first night's lodging in Springdale, I could barely contain my excitement.
