Zip drive -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Zip disk uses smaller media (about the size of a 3.5" microfloppy, rather than the (A digitally encoded recording on an optical disk that is smaller than a phonograph record; played back by a laser) compact disc-sized Bernoulli media), and a simplified drive design that reduced its overall cost.
This resulted in a disk that has all of the 3.5" floppy's convenience, but holds much more data, with performance that is much quicker than a standard floppy drive (though not directly competitive with (Computer hardware that holds and spins a magnetic or optical disk and reads and writes information on it) hard drives).
Zip media is similar in vertical size (but thicker) than 3.5" floppy disks, which means the drive slot is large enough to accept such a floppy.

Zip drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zip system is based loosely on Iomega's earlier Bernoulli Box system; in both systems, a set of read/write heads mounted on a linear actuator flies over a rapidly spinning floppy disk mounted in a sturdy cartridge.
This resulted in a disk that has all of the 9 cm (3.5") floppy's convenience, but holds much more data, with performance that is much quicker than a standard floppy drive (though not directly competitive with hard drives).
Zip media is similar in vertical size (but thicker) than 9 cm (3.5") floppy disks, which means the drive slot is large enough to accept such a floppy.

Encyclopedia: Floppy disk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive or FDD, the latter initialism not to be confused with "fixed disk drive", which is an old IBM term for a hard disk drive.
The 3½-inch disks had, by way of their rigid case's slide-in-place metal cover, the significant advantage of being much better protected against unintended physical contact with the disk surface when the disk was handled outside the disk drive.
The 5¼-inch disk had a large circular hole in the center for the spindle of the drive and a small oval aperture in both sides of the plastic to allow the heads of the drive to read and write the data.

 Iomega Zip Drive Help
When originally released the Iomega Zip disks were cable of holding 100MB of storage per diskette, later in 1999, Iomega released the Zip plus drive which is the next generation of Zip drives cable of reading 250 MB per diskette as well as reading the original 100MB diskettes.
If you are only able to eject the disk utilizing this method its a good possibility that the Zip drive may have physical issues and it is recommended to contact the manufacturer whom provided the Zip drive or Iomega for drive replacement.
If you use stacker to compress the disk do not reboot the system when it asks you to also you will need to make sure that the disk is none removable or it may cause in data loss, also do not use dblspace it will not work unless you are using a SCSI device.

This is a very good thing, because Zip Disks are essentially the same as Floppy Disks, except that they hold 100 or 250 megabytes of information, as opposed to a little less than 1.4 megabytes in a Floppy Disk.
Zip disks are the same size as floppy disks (3.5 inch flat squares), but are a little thicker.
Zip Disks are used fairly-often in school settings, because they hold a great deal of information.

Howstuffworks "How does a Zip drive store so much more data than a floppy drive?"
The main thing that separates a Zip disk from a floppy disk is the magnetic coating used on the disk.
On a Zip disk, the coating is much higher quality (see How Tape Recorders Work for some discussion on magnetic coatings).
The higher quality coating means that a Zip disk read/write head can be significantly smaller than a floppy disk's (by a factor of 10 or so).

 Info about Zip Disk use.
Zip disks were originally intended to be used as data transport and archiving media, however, they have come to be used by most of us as "diskettes".
People who use their Zip disks on both the Macintosh and Windows machines are also likely to have problems.
Stop using the disk at once and immediately attempt to copy all files to a hard drive and then go through file by file and attempt to open them and save them to a new disk.

Ultimately, I get the bluescreen message because, even though the disk is not in the machine, the machine still thinks that the disk is mounted, that is, that it is available to the system.
Windows makes the process of unmounting a disk transparent; as long as a disk is not being used, and nothing on it is "open," the disk is unmounted.
My personal preference would be for the button on the Zip drive to send a command to unmount the disk, and, once this has been done, to eject it.

The main thing that separates a Zip disk from a floppy disk is the magnetic coating used.
The higher-quality coating means that the read/write head on a Zip disk can be significantly smaller than on a floppy disk (by a factor of 10 or so).
The smaller head, in conjunction with a head-positioning mechanism that is similar to the one used in a hard disk, means that a Zip drive can pack thousands of tracks per inch on the disk surface.

Installing Linux on ZIP disk using ppa ZIP Drive Mini-Howto: Setting up the ZIP disk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Since the ppa version of the ZIP drive isn't a true SCSI device, it isn't a bootable device and, therefore, requires a boot disk which has ppa included in the kernel and not as a module.
For those who have to, or for that matter just want to, have several kernels on one floppy (now adays, mine are too large) or just want to be able to pass arguments (such as single user mode) I received email on how to install LILO on a floppy.
Once the kernel is on the floppy, you need to set the root device to the ZIP disk: ==> rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/sda1 I'm not sure if the next option is needed, but I did it none the less.

But does this mean, that ANY time when file from the Zip-disk is not closed when this Zip is ejected and another one inserted, the file structure of the first zip would be imprinted on the second with the destruction of the directory listing of the latter one?
