A member of the Ziphiidae, the northern bottlenose whale is one of the only species of this family on which long term, at-sea research has been conducted.
Molecular genetic discovery of a new beaked whale (Ziphiidae).
Scientists at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of National History in Washington DC and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, have discovered a new species of whale through DNA analysis of teeth and bones obtained from animals stranded on the coast of southern California.

For the Ziphiidae (beaked whales), a 424 bp fragment of the 5' end of the cytochrome b gene was also amplified, using the 'universal' primers, GLUDG-L and CB2-H (Palumbi 1996).
The shaded portion of the bar depicting each fragment indicates the consensus length of the alignment for the beaked whale (Ziphiidae) sequences in the reference database.
These consensus lengths are 437 bp in the control region alignment and 384 bp in the Ziphiidae cytochrome b alignment.

Toothed Whales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A similar toothed whale family is the Kogiidae family which includes the pygmy sperm whale and dwarf sperm whale which are significantly smaller than the sperm whale but share characteristics such as the spermaceti organ, the blunt head, and the distinctive narrow lower jaw.
Beaked whales are members of the Ziphiidae family.
The name Ziphiidae was derived from the Greek word "xiphos" meaning sword so beaked whales are the "sword-nosed whales." Beaked whales are the least well-known of all cetaceans.

Deep-diving behaviour of the northern bottlenose whale, Hyperoodon ampullatus (Cetacea: Ziphiidae)
Two deployments in 1997 on northern bottlenose whales in a submarine canyon off Nova Scotia demonstrated their exceptional diving ability, with dives approximately every 80 min to over 800 m (maximum 1453 m), and up to 70 min in duration.
A lack of correlation between dive times and surface intervals suggests that the dives were predominately aerobic.

As is characteristic for most beaked whale species (Ziphiidae), the teeth of bottlenose whales are reduced, and two conical teeth at the tip of the lower jaw erupt only in adult bulls.
The species is endemic in the cold temperate to sub-Arctic North Atlantic and prefers deep offshore waters, mostly seaward of the continental slope.
Cuvier's beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris, Sowerby's beaked whale Mesoplodon bidens and True's beaked whale Mesoplodon mirus are also oceanic, deep-diving species with reduced teeth that feed primarily on squid.
