  Palm Zire 71 Review
The battery in the Zire 71 is a 900mAh lithum-ion rechargeable.
A few minor things that the Zire 71 lacks but would be a nice addition include a microphone for voice recording, a LED to indicate charging status and vibration alert.
She was constantly draining the battery because she would put the Zire in the provided "leater" case, throw it in her purse, and then find out that presure on the case was causing it to hit against the D-Pad and turn it on.

Palm Zire 72 Reviews. PDAs Reviews by CNET.
The Zire's camera is built into the back of the device, where it (along with the expansion slot) adds a bit of bulk to the top of the handheld.
Like the Zire 31, the Zire 72 has a slot that is deeply recessed into the top of the unit; we found it difficult to insert and remove the memory card.
Compared to the Zire 71, the Zire 72 runs on a faster 312MHz Intel PXA270 processor, and it has twice the memory, for a total of 32MB (24MB of which are user-accessible).

Brighthand Reviews the Palm Zire 71
The only downsides we could find with the Zire 71 were its lack of integrated wireless (and its non-existent support for Palm's Bluetooth SD Card), its lack of flash ROM (which means you won't be able to upgrade its OS), and the lack of voice recording (for those who really, really need that feature).
The Zire 71 comes with 16MB of SDRAM (13MB of which is usable), which is plenty for most average users but considerably shy of that found on the new Tungsten C and most Pocket PCs.
Unfortunately, the Zire 71's battery is not user replaceable, and it can only be charged through the serial port (there's no separate AC port), so you'll either have to charge it through the cradle or purchase a travel charger.

Brighthand Reviews the palmOne Zire 72
At 4.6 inches tall, 3.0 inches wide, and 0.7 inches thick (12 cm x 7.5 cm x 1.7 cm), the Zire 72 is comparable to some of its competitors, the Dell Axim X3 and the Toshiba e400.
The Zire 72 runs Palm OS Garnet (5.2.8), essentially the same version of the operating system palmOne has used on all its models for the last year.
The Zire 72 includes 32 MB of RAM, but only 25 MB of this is available to you for storing applications and files.

The Zire 72 is an upgraded model of the Zire 71, with an improved camera, faster processor, and a larger memory.
When I next reviewed the Zire 31 ($149), my first reaction was influenced by the quality of the screen (see Figure 11), which was less than ideal compared to the better screen of the Zire 72.
In contrast to the Zire 72, the Zire 31's screen is a STN (Super Twisted Nematic) display with resolution of 160 by 160.

The Zire 21 can be called a tuning variant: more powerful processor and new OS version didn’t improve the situation as they functioned in a restricted way with the monochrome screen and without an audio jack.
Secondly, the Zire 31 comes with a color screen, which is not among the best, but still (Its predecessor the Zire 21 will definitely stay one of the last mass handhelds with a monochrome screen).
The top of the Zire 31 is a dark translucent plastic that has the double set of elements: IrDA port and the stylus silo are now neighboring with a headphone jack (3.5 mm) and SD slot protected by a shutter.

Palm: Zire tops 1 million units sold | CNET News.com
The Zire is a $99 low-end device, which comes with 2MB of memory--typical for entry-level Palm handhelds--a fl-and-white screen and a rechargeable battery.
The Zire was introduced late last year, shortly after Palm split its product line into two brands: the Zire for entry-level consumers, and the Tungsten for gadget fans and mobile professionals.
Palm has been struggling of late, but it's counting on the Zire line to tap the potentially huge consumer market while using the Tungsten line and its midrange Zire 71 to appease its traditionally loyal enthusiast audience.

Pen Computing Magazine: Palm Zire 71 review
While it looks similar to the original Zire, with its practical, yet attractively tapered shape, many differences quickly become obvious: the larger screen, the four buttons and joystick, and the more expensive-looking finish, all suggest that there's quite a bit more going on in the 71.
The original Zire was a flashback to 1999, embodying the Palm III in a simplified form factor, but the Zire 71 in many ways exceeds the capabilities of the higher-priced Tungsten T, introduced less than a year ago.
This Zire is truly worthy of such a cool name, a consumer product that I could recommend to all who think they might need a PDA, because it is economical, powerful, convenient, expandable, and downright snazzy.

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/19/2002 3:16:52 PM It might be true that a large number of Palms have third party software, but I think the point of the Zire is not to appeal to people who want to add a lot of apps, but to a new market of people who don't currently use Palm's.

Two new Zires from PalmOne - ZDNet UK Reviews
The Zire 31 is a step up from the entry-level Zire 21, while the Zire 72 follows on from the successful multimedia-oriented Zire 71, whose innovative sliding mechanism protects a built-in digital camera.
Like the Zire 71, this is a multimedia device: one of the application shortcut buttons is dedicated to playing digital music files, and there's a built-in digital camera.
The camera (which loses the sliding mechanism seen in the Zire 71) is a 1.2 megapixel unit that can capture video at 320 by 240, has a 2x digital zoom, and provides special effects such as sepia and fl-and-white.

That's not superlight, but this Zire is relatively compact (4.5 by 2.9 by 0.7 inches), especially for one that features a built-in camera.
Thankfully, Palm has equipped the Zire 71 with a high-resolution, 320x320-pixel, transflective 65,000-color display, which was so sorely lacking in some of its early color units and that left them a step behind the color CLIEs.
As noted, unlike the original Zire, this model has an SD slot at the top of the device, as well as a stereo headphone jack and a tiny mono speaker on the back of the unit.

As of Spring 2003, the basic Zire had sold well over 1 million units since it was introduced and is likely to sell a total of 2 million units by the start of next year.
The Palm Zire has been a very successful design for Palm but the true bang for the buck is actually very small when compared to prior Palm and Sony handheld that eventually fell to the $90-$125 range.
The fact that the Zire is under $100 and sells usually at a price significantly lower than that have contributed to its huge success.
