Zire Handheld - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Zire was superceded by the Zire 21 at the release of the "First Breed of PIM Plus Handhelds" on Fourth Quarter 2003.
The Palm Zire 71 was PalmOne's first attempt at a PDA with a built-in digital camera.
The Zire 72, while it had more features than the Zire 71, was hit with a lot of criticism and friction overtime.

Building on the remarkable success of the Zire 71 released a year ago, the Palm Zire 72 is all things that the 71 was and more.
Gone is the Zire 71's slider which revealed the camera; the Zire 72 has a fixed camera lens located near the top edge of the unit's backside that's always exposed and ready to go.
While the Zire 71 had a joystick navigator, the 72 has a rounded rectangular directional pad with a center action button.

Brighthand — Brighthand Reviews the Palm Zire 71
The only downsides we could find with the Zire 71 were its lack of integrated wireless (and its non-existent support for Palm's Bluetooth SD Card), its lack of flash ROM (which means you won't be able to upgrade its OS), and the lack of voice recording (for those who really, really need that feature).
In a tale of the tape, the Zire 71 measures 2.9" wide, 0.67" thick and 4.5" tall, and weighs in at a mere 5.3 ounces, perfect for the hand or the pocket.
The Zire 71 comes with 16MB of SDRAM (13MB of which is usable), which is plenty for most average users but considerably shy of that found on the new Tungsten C and most Pocket PCs.

The $299 Zire 71 is the first mid-range model to include a digital camera, and to use Palm OS 5, while the Tungsten C is the first Palm OS model to include integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking.
The Zire 71 is a far cry from the $99 Zire introduced by Palm back in October, which could confuse some people.
The Zire 71 uses a Texas Instruments OMAP processor running at 144 MHz and comes with 16 MB of RAM, of which 13 MB is available to the user.

Either way, the Zire should be able to double as an alarm clock when set at the highest volume setting, and while in close proximity to your ears.
On the bottom of the Zire is your standard Universal connector which allows you to use this new PDA with your other cables and cradles.
The 71 uses a transflective display similar to the HP1910, which is the first such display for a Palm device (Palm as in the company, not the OS).

The Palm Zire 71 PDA | The Register
The Zire 71 is the follow-up, adding a colour display, an integrated digicam and a little multimedia-friendly processor horsepower, all designed to tickle the fancy of buyers with more cash and a desire to spend it on the latest consumer electronics.
Internally, the Zire 71 is broadly the same as the higher end Tungsten T. It's based on a Texas Instruments OMAP310 processor running at 144MHz - the T uses the 1510 chip, which adds a DSP core to the ARM CPU core both processors share - and contains 16MB of RAM.
Because the 71 is designed to operate with a stylus, it has a dedicated text entry area, which eliminates most of the problems encountered using Graffiti 2 on the C. That said, full-screen text entry is also supported.

You get in addition to the Zire 71 handheld, a decent carry case, two CD with the essential and extra software for your Palm, the USB hotsync cable, a power adapter, and the cheapo plastic stylus kept from the first Zire model.
I was able to purchase the Zire 71 for $249 with a small discount through ebates.com and an additional $50 mail-in rebate after trading in a still functional m100 to Palm.

The Zire 71 also uses Graffiti 2, which uses multiple strokes for characters like “x” and “t” and should be easier for most users to master.
Another quibble is that the mail client that comes with the Zire 71 may be far more flexible than the one on my Palm V, since it allows syncing over the Internet and to a wider variety of mail types, but it also is a lot twitchier to get working.
Last, and most picky, the stylus that comes with the Zire 71 is a sad replacement for the nice metal-barreled stylus that came with the Palm V. I felt distinctly underwhelmed by the cheap plastic stylus.

Pen Computing Magazine: Palm Zire 71
While it looks similar to the original Zire, with its practical, yet attractively tapered shape, many differences quickly become obvious: the larger screen, the four buttons and joystick, and the more expensive-looking finish, all suggest that there's quite a bit more going on in the 71.
The original Zire was a flashback to 1999, embodying the Palm III in a simplified form factor, but the Zire 71 in many ways exceeds the capabilities of the higher-priced Tungsten T, introduced less than a year ago.
It could be that like the Tungsten W, the Zire 71 has a MediaQ processor to speed display performance, or else Palm has made some video tweaks to the OS from 5.0 to 5.2.1.

The Zire comes with its own built in camera that allows you to take pictures on the spot at one of three different resolutions (640x480, 320x240, 160x120), each to benefit the type of picture you are taking.
