Sima Guang - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zizhi tongjian "The Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government" was compiled by Sima Guang between the years 1067 and 1084, and was first printed at Hangzhou in 1086.
Indeed, though Sima Guang and his imperial master were in complete disagreement on policies for the present day, the enforced retirement proved essential for the historian to complete the project in full and final form.
He is remembered for his work Zizhi Tongjian (資治通鑑/资治通鉴) and his rivalry with contemporary statesman Wang Anshi (王安石).

The commentaries (音註 yinzhu) of Hu Sanxing 胡三省 (1230-1287) are today an integral part of the Zizhi tongjian itself and include the shiwen 釋旇 commentary of Shi Zhao 史炤 (1100-1160).

Chinese Literature - Tongjian gangmu 通鑒綱目 by Zhu Xi 朱熹 (www.chinaknowledge.org)
Living a century later than Sima Guang, the creator of the universal history Zizhi tongjian "Comprehensive mirror for aid in government", he believed this eminent work not yet worthy enough to be an adequate successor of the Spring and Autumn annals.
Zhu Xi therefore invented the pattern of gang (drawing rope of a fisher's net) and mu (meshes of the net) to create a kind of historiography that was quite similar to the twin classics of the Spring and Autumn Annals and the Zuozhuan.
The Tongjian gangmu was the first history of China the Europeans read and translated, like de Mailla's Histoire générale de la Chine, and Henri Cordier's Histoire générale.

Jul 14 2004, 05:11 AM Zizhi Tongjian is quite tough, because it goes year by year rather than in biography style like the dynastic histories.
My recommendation for tackling Zizhi Tongjian is to read the Tongjian Jishi Benmo 通鉴纪事本末, a rearrangement of the Zizhi Tongjian by Yuan Shu 袁枢 of the Southern Song.
It organises the annalistic style of the Zizhi Tongjian into distinct chapters, each focusing on a particular historical event such as a war or a political struggle in the imperial court.

My Bai Yang edition of the Tongjian Jishi Benmo hasn't got that detailed analysis, only a passing mention that the hammers were used to sharpen the spears.
Since Bai Yang didn't mention this theory in his translation of the Tongjian Jishi Benmo, I assume that it was included in his translation of the Zizhi Tongjian itself, which covers some events in greater detail and contains more of his personal comments.

Graff does make some errors in transliteration, mostly in the tedious process of converting earlier English-language sources from the Wade-Giles system to Hanyu Pinyin.
His maps are also too sketchy and few to help the reader much - those fluent in Chinese are encouraged to read Bo Yang's translation of the "Zizhi Tongjian" into modern Chinese (published in Taiwan) for the best available battle maps for this period.
Nonetheless, David Graff must be credited for writing a long-needed introduction to early Chinese warfare for Western military enthusiasts.
