Ziziphus is a genus of about 40 species of spiny shrubs and small trees in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae, distributed in the warm-temperate and subtropical regions throughout the world.

General Information about Ziziphus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
The genus Ziziphus (ber, jujube) belongs to the buckthorn familiy (Rhamnaceae).
Ziziphus plants typically develop a deep and extensive root system that ensures its ability to exploit deep water sources, thereby maintaining a sufficient water and nutrient supply for prolonged periods when the upper soil layers are drying out.
Ziziphus plants are cross-pollinated and are highly outbreeding, and as a result of this, the natural population, which largely regenerates through seeds, exhibits a vast range of genetic heterogeneity.

Floridian: Manatees, panthers and ... ziziphus?
The ziziphus, in danger of extinction, is a spiny shrub that grows 3 to 6 feet tall and has yellow flowers in January and February.
Ziziphus resists even the dedicated ministrations of these plant ecologists, who deliver pollen with tweezers and keep the secret of its location so gawkers will not trample its sandy hill.
Ziziphus lives in a clearing crowded by pest plants, stands of bamboo, plum trees and palms, their seeds and roots trucked in with yard debris, their growth threatening to blot the sun.

Saving Florida ziziphus, Plant Ecology Research at Archbold Biological Station, 11 December 1999, Fred Lohrer, revised ...
Florida ziziphus is a federally-listed Lake Wales Ridge endemic, named in 1984, and rediscovered in the wild in 1987.
Uniclonal populations of Florida ziziphus may have arisen through the fragmentation of a single vegetatively reproducing genet or through agamospermy, a process by which a plant produces viable seed without fertilization with the resulting offspring being genetically identical to the parent plant.
Florida ziziphus is in the direst of conservation situations: small remnant populations, limited genetic diversity, restricted sexual reproduction, and few occurrences that are surrounded by intact ecosystems.
