zodiac - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about zodiac   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The 12 astronomical constellations are uneven in size and do not between them cover the whole zodiac, or even the line of the ecliptic, much of which lies in the constellation of Ophiuchus.
At first various asterisms were chosen along the zodiac to serve as calendar reference points, but as these were unequally spaced the zone was eventually divided into 12 equal signs, each 30° wide.
Because of precession (the slow wobble of the Earth on its axis), the equinoctial point, and with it the zodiacal signs, moves westwards through the constellations at a rate of one sign in 2,150 years.

USS Yorktown was the name of the central starship in Gene Roddenberry's first Star Trek proposal to NBC in 1964.
In 2268, the Yorktown was scheduled to deliver vaccines bound for the colony on Theta VII after a rendezvous with the USS Enterprise.
While this vessel was never seen in the episode, it was generally assumed to be a Constitution-class starship, since when the characters of the time mentioned a starship, the term seemed to specify sister-ships of the Enterprise design.

Star Trek Dimension - Utopia Planitia
The Zodiac class is another "conjectural" official starship class never shown on-screen, of which we merely know the names and registry numbers of affiliated ships.
Since the facts and design of the Zodiac class, as presented here, are not part of the official Star Trek universe, all information given in "History" and "Specifications" have to be regarded as "non-canon" and are the property of the author.
Due to the restricted size, capacity and equipment of these ships, the class doesn't replace the rather old Constellation class vessels, but it sensibly supplements them by a armament which is very heavy for a deep space explorer and propulsion systems that are far superior to the Constellation class.

Outsiders might include: Zodiac Class (possibly a newer starship class, similar age to the Nebula Class), Mediterranean (as a Surveyor, or sometimes called a Freighter this doesn't fit so well, such a ship wouldn't be able to take on Jem'Hadar bugs as it did in 'A Time To Stand').

The Zodiac was released in 2241 and a number were hastily manufactured as what were supposed to be the most effective escort cruiser designs yet.
Although the hull shape is quite sleek, this contributes nothing to the Zodiac's high speeds, both in realspace and hyperspace.
As an escort, the Zodiac was designed with minimal crew in mind and can comfortably accomodate a crew of 7 which is more than enough to perform standard cruiser operation procedures.
