  Zoetrope, Top View
The zoetrope was invented in 1834 by William Horner, who originally called it a Daedalum ("wheel of the Devil").
The zoetrope is the third major optical toy, after the thaumatrope and phenakistoscope, that uses the persistence of motion principle to create an illusion of motion.
Whereas zoetrope picture strips were limited to about 15 pictures per strip, devices using reels of the new flexible film could present longer animations to viewers.

 Filming A Zoetrope
Put the Zoetrope on top, and you have a turn table that is crystal-synced (the one we used was, at least) at 33 rpm and 45 rpm.
If the shot is intended to simulate what a real Zoetrope looks like when spun, then you need to avoid the phasing in just the same way as you try to avoid rolling bars when filming TV sets.
It's true the zoetrope would have been run "free", but if it was run at - say - 12 fps, I'd be shooting at 24, giving 2 film frames per zoetrope image, and a suitable amount of non-persistence of vision flicker.

A zoetrope, according to Webster's Dictionary, is "an optical toy, in which figures made to revolve on the inside of a cylinder, and viewed through slits in its circumference, appear like a single figure passing through a series of natural motions as if animated or mechanically moved."
In 3-D Zoetrope, 60 phases of the torus-Costa surface transformation are attached to the edge of a wheel.

 Animation Devices
The major difference between the type of animation that can be done with a phenakistoscope and a flipbook is that the phenakistoscope has only a small number of drawings (usually eight or 12), and the movement of the sketch has to begin and end in the same position to form a smooth repeating cyclic motion.
Zoetropes are very similar to phenakistoscopes except that you make a slotted cylinder rather than a slotted disk.
One nice thing about constructing your zoetrope from fl cardstock is that you can make your drawings on small pieces of white paper and attach them to the zoetrope.

The Zoetrope Becomes a Movie Podcast : Today's Podcast By Scott Brenner.
The zoetrope, originally called the "daedalum" or "daedatelum," was invented in the first half of 19th century by George Horner.
But it was promoted in the US by William F. Lincoln as a "zoetrope." The first half of the 19th century saw a great many inventions designed to create moving images including the thaumatrope, the zoetrope, praxinoscope, the phenakistoscope and flip books.
The name zoetrope was created by combining two greek words- "zoe" and "trope." Zoe means life and trope means turn or wheel.

One of the early toys illustrating the principles of motion imagery was the Zoetrope, which consisted of a slotted drum into which strips of serial imagery were inserted and then spun in a way so that the slots would reveal images like a cinema projector shutter, and producing a motion loop.

What is zoetrope? - a definition from Whatis.com
Like other motion simulation devices, the zoetrope depends on the fact that the human retina retains an image for about a tenth-of-a-second so that if a new image appears in that time, the sequence was seem to be uninterrupted and continuous.
It also depends on what is referred to as the Phi phenomenon, which observes that we try to make sense out of any sequence of impressions, continuously relating them to each other.
The visual effect created by a zoetrope (or zoopraxiscope) is still used today to create animated GIFs and video display technologies such as streaming video, which essentially create an effect of motion by presenting discrete but closely-related images one after the other.
