 Libraries & Culture, Bookplate Archive
Buddhist temple libraries in Japan can be traced back to the seventh century, and might be considered similar in many respects to monastic libraries in the West.
However, the Zojoji Temple in Shiba, Tokyo prefecture, which was responsible for the bookplate depicted here, was built near the end of the sixteenth century.
During World War II the Zojoji Temple was destroyed by bombing, and although the buildings themselves have been restored, there appears to be little record or recollection left as to what its library might have contained or exactly how it might have been used.

Zojoji - Tokugawa's shrine Photo Gallery by Rudy Dale at pbase.com
Something about the Tokugawa's shrine at Zojoji always brings me back - perhaps it's the stereotypical traditional architecture of the buildings, but maybe it's also the perfect juxtaposition of old and new, with the Tokyo Tower looming mightily in the background and office towers rising ominously all around.
Tokyo gave me rather a grey day to photograph this otherwise colorful complex, with it's vivid red shrine.
