Zone system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The zone system is a unique approach to film exposure and development invented by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer in 1939 or 1940.
In fact, the zone system is conceptually extremely simple and because of certain limitations inherent to traditional and digital photographic materials, any photographer who achieves consistent quality in their work has to be using some variation of the zone system whether they are aware of this or not.
Zones that have a limited amount of texture and detail that are used to represent very dark or light objects that are slightly textured (Zones II and VIII).

Tutorial #7 (Zone System, Part #2)
Zone 0 is fl in the real world and clear on film, zone 10 is white in the real world and fl on film.
Zone 2 is the darkest real world value which should record enough "detail" in a negative to print as a "fl with a touch of detail" in a print.
Zone 8 is the brightest real world value which should record (and be developed for) enough "detail" in a negative to print as a "white with a touch of detail".

 Zone System
The Zone System is a method of understanding and controlling the exposure and development of the negative, and how to vary that exposure to get the results you want.
The Zone System was developed by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer as a simple and straightforward method by which they could control exposure.
That exposure is for a mid-gray Zone V. A one-degree spot meter is advantageous as it allows you to read a single small object from a distance, or, a small portion of your overall scene.

For some reason the Zone System for fl and white photography conjures up trepidation among those who don't know what it is, as if it were some arcane and mysterious knowledge that only High Priests are privy to, beyond the ken of ordinary people.
Zone 0 exposure/development results in pure fl in the final print, and Zone X exposure/development gives pure white.
The Zone System is the approach that lets you translate subject zones into the print tones that you desire.

Zone 1 is pure fl; zone 9 is pure white; zone 5 can be described subjectively as middle gray.
The difference between zones at the ends of the scale (1 and 2 or 8 and 9) is much less than between zones in the middle (4, 5, and 6).
The key to the zone system is visualizing how you want areas of the scene to appear in the final image, or in the language of the zone system, where you want to "place" them.

 Zone System Follies
Since Zone III is 2 stops less than Zone V, you should reduce exposure by 2 stops from the meter reading of the shadow area….
In fact, paper is seldom able to differentiate as many zones as a negative—for a wide contrast negative with all zones represented and differentiated, a straight print will result in one end or the other of the spectrum of zones squeezed together and lost.
The second part of the zone system mantra is to "develop for the highlights." The idea is to give more or less than normal development to a negative to achieve detail in the highlights (the densest area of the negative).

The essence of the Zone System is summed up in a simple expression-"Expose for shadows, develop for highlights." We saw last time that the main tonal areas of fl-and-white negative film affected by changing the film exposure are the shadows.
Zone 0 is the darkest possible tone a paper is capable of producing, followed by Zones I, II, and III, which are shadows.
Zone V is the camera exposure, that is, it is the setting at which the film is exposed.

Since this additional use of the Zone System to control contrast is only useful when shooting large format fl-and-white sheet films, I only use the Zone System to increase the accuracy of my exposures on color slide film and color negative film.

A simplified zone system for making good exposures
Ansel Adams developed the Zone system to cope with this situation (see history, at the bottom of the page).
His system is very elegant— it produces prints of exceptional tonality, and most images print on a single grade of paper (Adams preferred grade 2), but it requires a tremendous amount of testing, calibration, record keeping, and time.
The charts below are derived from an equation intended to make zone 5 on a properly calibrated monitor appear as subjective middle gray— about 21% of the maximum screen brightness level, similar to middle gray on a print (18% reflectance referenced to 90% white).

Zone V is 18% gray which is the shade of gray that your light meter averages everything to.
I find the exposure side of the zone system pretty useful, it takes a lot of the guesswork and hit and miss out of photography, you have more control of how the negative will come out which is always good in my opinion.
The zone system applied to large or medium format B&W photography where single sheet film is used, because the whole thing involves getting the best possible tonal range and contrast, and for that, you have to have control over the development of each individual photograph.
