Topic: Zongo

Norbert Zongo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Norbert Zongo (born July 1949, Koudougou) was the publisher and editor of the Burkina Faso newspaper l'Indépendant.
On December 13th, 1998, Zongo's burned body was found along with bodies of his brother Ernest Zongo, chauffeur Ablasse Nikiema, and Blaise Ilboudo, in a vehicle near Sapouy, some 100 kilometers south of the capital city of Ouagadougou.
In January 1999, Francois Compaoré, President Blaise Compaoré's brother, was charged with murder and harbouring the body of the victim in connection with the death of David Ouedraogo, his chauffeur, who had died as a result of turture in January 1998.

Reporters sans frontières - Burkina Faso
Norbert Zongo’s newspaper had thrown itself into getting to the bottom of the case, which was the lead story in practically all the last 15 issues of the weekly.
For instance, the RSF delegation only had to meet one of Norbert Zongo’s colleagues to be able to state firmly that the flask found at the scene, and which some people saw as proof that petrol had been thrown at the vehicle before it was set on fire, belonged to the driver.
What remains is the theory of a murder due to Norbert Zongo’s investigative journalism, and in particular to his inquiries about the death of François Compaoré’s driver and the immunity from prosecution apparently enjoyed by the president’s brother in the case.

Zongo Street was situated at the very end of the Muslim section of Kumasi.
The author, whose late father, Sarki Abubakar Ali III, was the Emir of the Kumasi Zongo, uses language that is vivid, colourful and spot on, often interspersing local slang, Akan words and Hausa phrases into his flawless and lyrical English.
A wonderful example of this is when, in the touching and beautifully rendered "Mallam Sile," Abeeba, the protagonist's no-nonsense wife, resorts to a physical fight with the local gangster in order to collect the long-standing financial debt owed her tender-hearted and overly-forgiving husband, the neighborhood tea seller.
