Zonophone, early on also rendered as Zon-O-Phone was a record label founded in 1899 in Camden, New Jersey by Frank Seaman.
The Zonophone name was not that of the company, but was applied to the records and machines sold by Seaman from 1899-1900 to 1903.
Victor Talking Machine continued use of the "Zonophone" name to market cheaper records which for whatever reason were not of the technical standard of the Victor label until retiring the label in the U.S. in 1910.

Similarly the American 'Zonophone' catalogue was marketed under the auspices of the Victor Talking Machine Company until 1912, at which time the label disappeared from the American market.
The early recordings produced by the independent International Zonophone Company, between 1899 and 1903, include numerous selections of artistic and historical interest, which are most sought after by record collectors.
This discography is the result of almost three decades of collating information and research on the label with the cooperation of EMI Archives, London and Frank Andrews, who is well known to record researchers and collectors for his pioneering work in the field.

In 1903, Zonophone (a troublesome rival), was purchased by the Gramophone Company and Victor (both of whom held the 'dog and trumpet' trademark), and thereafter was used by the European organisation as a marque for low-priced records, or export.
Two Zonophone export lines that concern this discussion were launched in May 1912: the general overseas 3000 series, and a 4000 series for the South African market.
Selection of the 3000 series by Zonophone indicates that their releases in this sequence were popular in West Africa (in this respect Nigeria), the region in which Yoruba is spoken.

New companies, primarily Zonophone and Victor evolved as a result of the litigation.
Further legal actions dragged on until 1903, when all of the United States and Latin American assets of Zon-o-phone were obtained by Victor, and the Europe and British Commonwealth assets by the Gramophone and Typewriter Company (HMV).
Victor and HMV continued use of the "Zonophone" name to market cheaper records - till 1910 in the USA, and in various forms and combinations in the UK and parts of Europe on and off till the early 1980s.

On a far more conceptual level, the music from Zonophone is the junction between three fundamental elements: time, space and movement.
This dynamic can be positive and thriving or negative and destructive, but either way, it always reflects the state of mind of the person listening to it as much as the one of the person who made it.
It is through this trilogic dynamic that Zonophone (and music in general) takes all its sense.

 Early Record Label History
In 1903, the company had acquired the British interest of the International Zonophone Company, and used the Zonophone label as its popular label.
Whether this was by acquisition or not, perhaps a reader can tell me. In 1911, the Zonophone and Twin labels were merged to form Zonophone-Twin.
The size, characters and colour scheme of the labels differed little from the Zonophone label, so the records were still referred to as "Zonophones", despite carrying the Twin logo and text "The Twin".

The Regal Zonophone label was created by EMI back in the 1930s when it merged its two budget labels - Zonophone and Regal.
It provided musical hall acts like George Formby with an outlet, and in turn these artists kept the label going until the 60s when the Salvation Army provided it with its first hit record.
They were soon joined by Joe Cocker and Tyrannosaurus Rex, but when these producton deals ended, Regal Zonophone folded.
