Shutterbug: Sigma’s 120-300mm f/2.8 APO HSM Zoom Lens
It’s the 120-300mm f/2.8 APO HSM zoom from Sigma, and it is the first pro-quality zoom lens with both a 300mm top end and a fast fixed f/2.8 aperture.
How they manage to build this complicated lens (it has 18 elements in 16 groups!) and keep it this hand holdable is beyond me. The finish is Sigma’s slick satin fl finish, and the huge knurled rubber focus and zoom rings are a nice touch.
Autofocus was brilliant—the lens banged into focus when pointed in any direction—and focus speeds seemed very consistent with what I had been experiencing with my good older 300mm f/2.8 L lens.

Zoom lens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early forms of zoom lenses were used in optical telescopes to provide continuous variation of the magnification of the image, and this was first reported in the proceedings of the Royal Society in 1834.
This compensation may be done by mechanical means (moving the complete lens assembly as the magnification of the lens changes), or optically (arranging the position focal plane to vary as little as possible as the lens is zoomed).
An important issue in zoom lens design is the correction of optical aberrations (such as chromatic aberration, and in particular, field curvature) across the whole operating range of the lens; this is considerably harder in a zoom lens than a fixed lens, which need only correct the aberrations for one focal length.

 10. Lenses
Since a short lens includes a wide sweep of the scene, all of the objects in the scene are reduced to fit onto the image sensor.
When the focal length of a lens is close to the diagonal measurement of the film format, the lens is said to be "normal" or close to the magnification of the human eye.
A digital zoom lens uses sleight of hand by taking a part of the normal image falling on the sensor and then saving that part as is, or enlarging it to fill the sensor.

Zoom Lens Tricks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
If a zoom lens can be extended out of it's mount with an extension tube, unscrewed and/or held with matte box rods the lens will now focus closer than minimum focus as you zoom wider.
Calculate the lens extension exposure increase for the maximum focal length of the lens which is usually negligible.
Zoom lenses can be extended at a loss of sharpness and F-stop.

The Canon 16x Manual Servo Zoom Lens for the XL1 / XL1S by Ken Tanaka
The lens’ zoom servo is engaged and disengaged by a switch located on the lower right side of the lens barrel.
The 16x Manual Servo lens’ variable-speed servo is capable of producing a good, slow creeping zoom although it is not quite as slow as the superb crawl of the 16x IS II lens.
While the lens’ true manual focus feature may make it attractive to those frustrated with the 16x IS II lens’ auto-focus and servo-manual focus facility, continuous manual focus takes a great deal of concentration and effort on the part of a camera operator particularly where subject motion is involved.

In addition, three hybrid aspherical lens elements and two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements are used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor to enhance the optical quality in digital photography.
The zoom lens uses a new optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager within a certain scope over the entire image field from the center to the periphery, by considering the effects of variances due to zooming.
The lens is a multi-purpose zoom lens, yet excellent portability and ease of use are assured.

NEWS! - Sigma: new macro zoom lens
The new lens design and multi layer lens coating reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras.
This lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 at 17mm wide angle and yet it is compact, with an overall length of 79mm (3.1”) and diameter 82.5mm (3.2”).
The lens design incorporates an inner focusing system, which ensures fast AF speed as well as prevents the front of the lens rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and petal shaped lens hoods.

Tele-Zoom Lens targets digital SLR cameras., Tamron USA Inc.
For photographers who bought their digital SLR camera in a kit with a standard zoom lens but are dissatisfied with the telephoto capability of the standard lens, the new AF55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di II LD MACRO offers in a second lens a desirable telephoto range at an affordable price.
This is a telephoto zoom for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras that covers the focal length range equivalent to 85-310mm when converted to a 35mm format.
The zoom lens uses a new optical system designed to confine the changing angles of incidences of light rays reaching the imager within a certain scope over the entire image field by considering the effects of variances due to zooming.

18-70mm AF-S DX Lens Review by Thom Hogan
Having a kit lens for consumer camera isn't new for Nikon, but a closer look at the specs showed this was an AF-S lens, an ED lens, and a DX lens.
The advantage of a DX lens is that it can be smaller and lighter than a lens of similar specifications that needs to cover the full 35mm frame.
The zoom ring is quite stiff and not at all fluid (as I've used my lens and moved it in and out of dry environments, it has a bit of a "catch" in the middle of the zoom range).

 PhotoNotes.org Dictionary - Zoom lens
A lens with a variable focal length is a true optical zoom.
It’s much more complicated to build a zoom lens, and so high-quality zooms tend to be very expensive and low-quality zooms tend to offer poor optical quality.
Zoom lenses also have either fixed maximum apertures (constant aperture) or they have maximum apertures which vary according to the current focal length setting (variable aperture).

A common application of a lens is to create a callout in which a portion of a drawing can be seen in greater detail superimposed upon, or off to the side of, the drawing.
Zoom Lens also allows you to apply special effects to what is visible behind a lens through Illustrator's Live Effects feature.
Zoom lenses are live on Illustrator's artboard: as you move or edit the objects lying underneath the lens, the lens is updated to reflect the change.

A feature of type 207 miniature zoom lenses is that they can focus down onto objects that are very close to the lens.
The use of the lens at such close object distances opens the door to a range of macro applications because it allows an object to be shown at a very enlarged size on a TV monitor.

18-55mm AF-S DX Lens Review by Thom Hogan
Having a kit lens for consumer camera isn't new for Nikon, but the specs say this an AF-S lens, an ED lens, and a DX lens, which seems to imply something designed to a higher level of quality.
This is a two ring design; the zoom ring is a big frontmost ring, while the focusing ring is barely a quarter inch wide and at the very front of the lens.
Again, since this is a DX lens, that's not likely, though in a pinch it can suffice as a 24-55mm lens on those bodies.

In variable parameter lenses the image formation process is a dynamic function of the lens control parameters, and thus the terms in the camera model must also be variable.
Second, the relationship between the lens' physical configuration and the control parameters is complex and typically unknown.
The models operate across continuous ranges of focus and zoom with an average error of less than 0.14 pixels between the predicted and the measured positions of features in the image plane.
