After leaving Woody, Zoot and Al were briefly with Artie Shaw’s band in 1949.
Zoot, Al, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, and Paul Desmond were all saxophonists who came of age in the post-war era.

Sims was a professional by the age of 15, landing his first important job with Bobby Sherwood's Orchestra, and joined Benny Goodman's big band for the first time in 1943; he would be one of BG's favorite tenormen for the next 30 years.
Sims was also a star soloist with Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band of the early 1960s and visited the Soviet Union with Benny Goodman in 1962.

Tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims (October 29, 1925 &; March 23, 1985) worked as a professional musician from the age of 15, touring with dance bands.
Zoot Sims also performed with Gene Roland, who began writing for four tenor saxophones, leading to the establishment of the famous saxophone section known as the Four Brothers.

Sims was the first American to play a residency at Ronnie Scott's following the lifting of the embargo on visiting musicians in 1961, and he returned there many times, his last visit being in 1982.

Beefheart's Magic Band: guitarist Bill Harkleroad (aka Zoot Horn Rollo), bassist Mark Boston (aka Rockette Morton), and percussionist/drummer Art Tripp (aka Ed Marimba), the latter of which also played in Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention for several albums, as well.
Both Harkleroad and Boston had been members of the Magic Band from 1968 through 1974, when a falling out between them and Beefheart (over their unhappiness with the album Unconditionally Guaranteed), led to their exit.

ZOOT ALLURES- For those of you who shelled out the 27 bucks, then I will tell you that this tune is essentially performed as on FZPTMOFZ, with the standard deviation coming in Frank’s lengthy and highly experimental solo.
FIND HER FINER- Essentially performed as on “Zoot Allures”, though minus the guitar as Frank is doing the singing and thus cannot play the guitar.
On this tour, “Zoot Allures” consists of the head, similarly played as on YCDTOSA Volume III, a guitar solo which evolves from this head, and the extended “Ship Ahoy” outro.
